The FReeper Canteen Presents...
Happy Labor Day!

H I S T O R Y |
Labor Day is a national legal holiday that is over 100 years old. Over the years, it has evolved from a purely labor union celebration into a general "last fling of summer" festival. It grew out of a celebration and parade in honor of the working class by the Knights of Labor in 1882 in New York. In 1884, the Knights held a large parade in New York City celebrating the working class. The parade was held on the first Monday in September. The Knights passed a resolution to hold all future parades on the same day, designated by them as Labor Day. The Socialist Party held a similar celebration of the working class on May 1. This date eventually became known as May Day, and was celebrated by Socialists and Communists in commemoration of the working man. In the U.S., the first Monday in September was selected to reject any identification with Communism. In the late 1880's, labor organizations began to lobby various state legislatures for recognition of Labor Day as an official state holiday. The first states to declare it a state holiday in, 1887, were Oregon, Colorado, New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. Then in 1894, Congress passed a law recognizing Labor Day as an official national holiday. Today, Labor Day is observed not only in the U.S. but also in Canada, and in other industrialized nations. While it is a general holiday in the United States, its roots in the working class remain clearer in European countries. |
For a lot of people, Labor Day means two things: a day off and the end of summer. But why is it called Labor Day? Labor Day is a day set aside to pay tribute to working men and women. Membership in labor unions in the United States reached an all-time high in the 1950s when about 40 percent of the work force belonged to unions. Today, union membership is less than 12 percent of the working population and closing in on just 11 percent. Labor Day now carries less significance as a celebration of working people and more as the end of summer. Schools, government offices and businesses are closed on Labor Day so people can get in one last trip to the beach or have one last cookout before the weather starts to turn colder. |

So what about you? How are you celebrating Labor Day?
Please remember that The Canteen is here to support and entertain our troops and veterans and their families, and is family friendly.

I have been retired for 11 years now. I am no longer a member of the working majority. One thing I should have done was to have more fun along the way. I do expect to eat too much tomorrow though.

Finding the Way Home
September 3, 2018
[God] comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
2 Corinthians 1:4
Sometimes this journey through life can be so difficult that were simply overwhelmed, and it seems theres no end to the darkness. During such a time in our own familys life, my wife emerged one morning from her quiet time with a new lesson learned. I think God wants us not to forget in the light what were learning in this darkness.
Paul writes this same thought to the Corinthians (2 Corinthians 1), after describing the terrible difficulties he and his team endured in Asia. Paul wants the Corinthians to understand how God can redeem even our darkest moments. Were comforted, he says, so we may learn how to comfort others (v. 4). Paul and his team were learning things from God during their trials that they could use to comfort and advise the Corinthians when they faced similar difficulties. And God does that for us as well, if were willing to listen. He will redeem our trials by teaching us how to use what weve learned in them to minister to others.
Are you in the darkness now? Be encouraged by Pauls words and experience. Trust that God is right now directing your steps and that Hes also stamping His truths on your heart so you can share them with others who are in similar circumstances. Youve been there before, and you know the way home.
Father, help those who are hurting today so they may see and know Your loving presence in their darkest hours.
Never forget in the light what you learn in the darkness.
The Greek word for comfort (paraklesis) means to come alongside and help. Jesus is called our parakletos (advocate) in 1 John 2:1. The Holy Spirit is another advocate or comforter (John 14:1617). Paul asserts that God is the God of all comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3). The triune GodheadFather, Son, and Holy Spiritis there with us in our pain. By saying God is the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (vv. 23), Paul reminds us that coming alongside to help each other is a family duty and privilege (v. 4).
To whom can you be a parakletosa comforterthis coming week?

Today I filled the tank and rode on a large loop through country roads in SE Massachusetts. I went through Hanover, Halifax, Hanson, Middleborough, Lakeville, Carver, Pembroke, Pembroke, Marion, Wareham, Rochester, and Plymouth. The roads were smooth, scenic...and nearly empty. Everybody uses the big main roads to go to Cape Cod, and leaves the back roads for us bikers. I did 85 miles of sheer delight!

I put 85 miles on Blue today, just riding around the south shore around Buzzards Bay. It was really lovely.
Lot of bikers on the road giving me a smile and the secret wave.
Penny had a few walks, but nothing special. We will wait till school starts and then we will have all the parks and woods to ourselves! :-)
Tuesday is the next pub Nite, and it’s very local.

My eyes are patriotic as they are red, white and blue. I would stay away form the drinks with the umbrellas in them as they would probably turn my eyes RED.
God bless Donald Trump. God bless AMERICA!!!

Good evening, radu....hope you had a nice day of rest after working at the museum.
I got all my errands done and tomorrow is for me! I’m hoping it is as nice out on the deck as it has been for two days....warm, sunny, and blue sky. I watered today and will spread some grass seed tomorrow. Don’t know if it will grow (the two trees keeping the sun out are gone), but I’ll try.
