There Is A Naval Mine Floating In The Waters Near Kitsap Naval Base In Washington (Updated)
Time ^

There appears to be a contact-style naval mine floating in the waters near Bainbridge Island, Washington. This island is located directly across from Seattle and vessels have to navigate around either side of it to reach the sprawling Kitsap Naval Base. The base is home to one of the Navy's most important shipyards as it is capable of servicing even the largest supercarriers and is a major decommissioning site for retired nuclear powered vessels.

KGW.com reports that the mine was spotted near Brownsville Marina, which sits across the channel from the western side of the island. The Coast Guard has simply called the object 'potentially unexploded ordnance' and is patrolling a 1,500 meter perimeter around it. Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) divers are said to have inspected the device, but we don't know yet what they discovered.

So that is the much acclaimed but rarely seen “Flux Capacitor”!

Yes, but this is an EMPTY flux capacitor! (Which is why it is floating so high in the water.)

Have you seen this video?

Safety reminder! Always remember to refill your flux capacitor with an FAA-approved propwash from a calibrated and properly grounded flight line extension cord before your next flight!

That they blew it up suggests it real. Lack of rust, high float is suspicious. Wonder if there are more where it came from? Will they bury this or show some transparency?

Its a small looking mine. I remember when I was a kid after the war ended there was a mine on the beach in Coney Island. It was black and large. Judging from the ripples this isn’t a big one. It looks to be about 2’ across. Some one looking for 15 minutes of fame. After 75 yrs in the water it looks awful clean with no thick weed, and no built up barnacles? I had to clean a boat after every summer use, scraping the bottom free of barnacles and weed growth.

Yeah - Safer for the EOD to blow it up.
But for tracking it down - if not a WWII relic - then the evidence is also blown up.

You’d need to see the video to judge if the real mine explosives blew up, the mine warhead were empty and dumped in the water as a gag, if the original explosives were a dud, or if just the detonating charge went off.

Wow... I used to live on the water 3 houses up from that marina. The naval underwater warfare center (Keyport) was about 2 more miles up. We often saw SEALS playing with their man-powered sub at the marina.

They did torpodo testing in that area during WW2... maybe a relic from those days.

And coolant water must be deionized water for a flux capacitor. If not, failures like today's sky diving airplane having to make a crash landing will become all too frequent.

Also the compass was not calibrated and was hung up on the compass stop at 387 degrees. It's easy to spin off course without a good compass stop.

“It looks just like a World War II mine,” said Tom Parks, a retired Navy master chief who snapped pictures as the corroded object bobbed by his Brownsville home.”
“The object was round and heavily rusted, with rods protruding from its surface. According to a Navy news release, “the unidentified moored mine was found to have decades of marine growth”

A common method of destroying mines is to attach an explosive to it, which could also account for “it blew up”. My guess this Wednesday morning is that it was a fake since it is riding too high to be a normal naval mine. But, better safe than sorry.
