Republicans say confirming a replacement would be a problem
Republican senators grew increasingly vocal in their warnings to President Donald Trump if he fires Attorney General Jeff Sessions, including threats not to vote for a replacement.
Sen. Ben Sasse came to the floor Thursday afternoon to read into the Congressional Record the statement that Sessions, a former Alabama senator well-liked by his former colleagues, issued in response to criticism from Trump.
Sessions was highlighting the independence of the Justice Department, and Sasse, a Nebraska Republican, wanted it to be perfectly clear that he would have the attorney generals back.
Bizarrely, there are people in this body now talking like the attorney general will be fired, should be fired, Im not sure how to interpret the comments of the last couple of hours, Sasse said. I would just like to say, as a member of the Judiciary Committee, and as a member of this body, I find it really difficult to envision any circumstance where I would vote to confirm a successor to Jeff Sessions if he is fired because he is executing his job, rather than choosing to act in a partisan hack.

Collins, is that what the tough, fearless Maine lobstermen want representing them?
Donald Trump is a Harry Truman Democrat who ran as a Republican. During the 2016 campaign I believe it was Paul Ryan who commented, "Trump doesn't know the secret handshake." This is why the Republican Establishment doesn't like or trust him.
The Democrats have gone so far left that neither Harry Truman nor Jack Kennedy would recognize the party.
Trump has no more than 20 congressmen solidly in his corner and no more than 5 senators. If the lights were turned out and there were only a voice vote, the House would impeach and the Senate convict in record time. The Deep State owns Congress, and even those Deep Staters publicly in Trumps' corner are doing so only out of a combination of fear and appearances.
True. Most of these so called ‘republicans’ are unindicted co-conspirators to O’muslim’s wholesale treason and lawlessness. His fundamental transformation. They allowed and funded it all. The reason why America is on that sad height
“... and as a member of this body, I find it really difficult to envision any circumstance where I would vote to confirm a successor to Jeff Sessions if he is fired ...”
Because you are a puke.
Shakey and Sassee! What a duo!
Sasse touted himself as the “Obamacare slayer”.
Meh...not so much.
Grassley and Graham have already given the greenlight for Trump to dump Sessions. (Don’t ask me to explain it) Sasse just committed hari-kari and won’t be in the senate after 2020.
“Grassley and Graham have already given the greenlight for Trump to dump Sessions. “
I’ll explain it...the fix is in. Magoo’s work and damage is done. Mueller is going to issue an impeachment report to congress.
Grassley and Graham are distancing themselves from the inevitable sh!tstorm that’s sure to follow. IOW, that don’t want to be tarred and feathered.
I’m still thinking (maybe more like hoping) that this is a good-cop, bad-cop, play by Trump and Sessions and Session, after he has complete Democrat support for staying on the job, or else Trump is impeached, is going to DROP THE HAMMER on all the Deep State crap that’s been going on.
...and there are some others thinking that may be the plan too. It just looks too perfectly chroeographed to think they (Trump and Sessions) are virtually enemies now, when Sessions was so critical with helping Trump on immigration during the campaign - hard to remember back then, but Sessions was probably the best friend Trump had in the Senate before being elected to the White House.
It’s his JOB to vote on any successor to Sessions, just like it’s President Trump’s prerogative to fire Sessions and appoint someone else. How DARE Ben Sissie try to usurp a duly elected president’s authority!
“This is why the Republican Establishment doesn’t like or trust him”
The old establishment. Paul Ryan, Flake and other vocal Trump critics are finished. They will be gone this year.
The others got the message. They have no choice but to support the president. Trump’s approval rating is record high with the base. He is more popular than Reagan ever was.
Impeachment will never happen. Even the democrats don’t want it. Trump as president energizes their base like nothing they have ever seen. They are raising money like never before. This is all they care about.
Oh, I do get it, absolutely. First, I think politics attracts some of the least impressive people you could possibly find in society, and I have extremely little respect for the vast majority of them. They’re not particularly smart, not creative, not ethical, and passionate only about keeping their jobs. They are serving themselves, not the public. The Republican Establishment don’t like him because they don’t control him and he doesn’t care about their little country club or their inane metaphorical ‘secret handshake’. He thinks they’re idiots, and he’s right.
Sasse and Collins "Trust Sessions".
Isn't that something.
He is taking the same path as UpChuck Hagel; a self-serving POS representing himself instead of those of us who elected him. Worthless ass.
Charlie Rose once called politics “show biz for ugly people.”
May all the Swamp bottom-feeders, anti-American, self-serving waste get all that the deserve.
“Mueller is going to issue an impeachment report to congress.”
There is no such thing as an impeachment report.
The Mueller report will be a compilation of all the crap that the New York Times has been printing for the last year.
Old news. Forgotten in a week.
Ok...a report designed to influence Congress to impeach.
Better?
I’m thinking Grassley may have a thing or two to say to Benjie. As head of the Judiciary Committee, he runs the show; Bun’s job is to fall into line.
