THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
HARRY WARREN

Long before MTV, there were music videos known as soundies, and this is a primitive one from 1934 featuring Don Redmans band doing the kind of thing that Jimmy Lunceford would do in later years. The scat lyrics remind me of a clean version of hip-hop. The dance and vocal team is Red & Struggs.

Mort Dixon teamed up with Harry for this 1928 hit. The recording is somewhat mislabeled. The band was Leonard Joys, not Nat Shilkrets, and vocalist Frank Crumit got no attention on the label at all. My favorite version of "Nagasaki." I had always thought that it was by Nat Shilkret, who put out a lot of fine music.

Well I had a weird day. But I found out what was messing with my water heater. There was something running off the dedicated circuit that shorted out. (Heat tape...remember the winter my oil lines froze?) Only this was something “installed” by the previous owner.
Then, our favorite trail on the site of an old fireworks factory and munitions facility (WW2) was gated off with huge chain link fences and big KEEP OUT signs.
so I looked it up on the internet.
“Controlled Detonations”.
Someone must have found some old unexploded ordinance on the trail.
Glad Penny didn’t find it. YIKES!

In researching these songs, I’ve found Victor to be amazingly sloppy in printing credits on their labels. Almost negligent. Columbia and Decca, on the other hand, appeared to be quite diligent in getting it right.

LOL...quote from “The Mikado” in that one (Miya Sama).
I’m thinking that this particular number wasn’t very popular a few years later in 1945.

The Fat Man’s music has worn well over the decades. Not just his performances but the songs he wrote.

The Mills Brothers were just starting out when this recording was made in 1937. Thats a pair of hands mimicking a muted trumpet.
