TETERBORO, New Jersey (WABC) -- A plane is attempting to make an emergency landing after it blew off two of its tires during takeoff at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey.
An airport source said the pilot took off around 10:50 a.m. after its two front tires blew off, and the plane is now circling the airport before it attempts to land.
Sources said 16 people are on board. The aircraft is a Gulfstream IV, a jet flown mainly for private and business use.
The aircraft was heading to London Luton Airport in Luton, England.
The plane was expected to land at Teterboro around 12:20 p.m., but it was diverted to Westfield-Barnes Regional Airport in Westfield, Massachusetts.

—— Wasnt that the cause of the Concorde accident? ——
Absolutely. Debrid penatrated the fuselage.
“It was about how his training saved them. Not one mention, in any form, of divine intervention. Hes pretty much a turd as far as Im concerned.”
How childish. What makes you think it WAS divine intervention? Conversely, when an outcome is bad, did god turn thumbs down, like Nero?
-— And I always thought they dumped it over the ocean. -—
That would be the preference for several reasons. But this happens over land, too. Generally, the fuel atomizes and evaporates. The hydrocarbons definitely enter the atmosphere, but seldom make it to the ground in any significant manner.
Oops sorry that’s already posted
Sometime after reaching V1, the bad tire partially disintegrated taking out one of the brake hydraulic systems. That meant the wheels had to remain down and locked while the pilots rerouted to a major airport which also was a Learjet service center. We leveled off at much lower than the usual 41,000 foot cruising altitude, and the emergency oxygen masks automatically dropped - that got my attention.
Upon landing the damaged tire complete disintegrated and took out it's twin. There was a fireworks display of metal sparks from the mostly bare wheels contacting the pavement at high speed.
We rolled to stop on the runway and the pilot in one motion grabbed the extinguisher and very quickly exited the door. Lots of black smoke mixed with the clouds of CO2. Quite a show.
No one was hurt and even the landing gear was not a complete loss.
Even though that early model of Lear could be something of a deathtrap, it was by far the most fun type of flying I have ever experienced.

Debris on the runway?
Remember the plane that got confused on take-off in a cold fog and tried to use the taxiway where there was a D-9 dozer in the way?
You listen to him brag for 45 minutes and then see whos childish. Hes a self absorbed turd.
We had him at an annual business conference.
Our first 10 minutes was the audio recording of the incident with transcription on screen followed by Sully about Sully.
He signed us each a book, but didn’t do photos with anyone.
I see it’s being sold for $39.95 now. Hmm.
FOD on runway maybe.
Gulfstream jets are made by General Dynamics a US based defense contractor, but it looks like they have Gulfstream facilities in Savannah, Dallas, and Mexico

Lot of fuel if they were going to Europe.
I think there's less than a one in a million chance of that happening.
More likely, the writer speaks English as a second language, and doesn't understand our idioms.
Yup, sure was. I flew over the scene of that accident shortly after it happened and it was pretty disturbing ive had several tire failures on landing but never had an issue and take off.
Sounds like you were forced to go to a company event and you had a chip on your shoulder. He was paid to tell one story, how he was able to safely ditch the plane.
So of course he told the story of his life in aviation, in the USAF, in flying, and how that all brought him to that day.
Sounds like you were expecting Billy Graham or something.
Also sounds like you may not have spent much time around fighter pilots if you were shocked that one likes telling stories about himself.
Aircraft are made on aluminium so a hunk of steel moving 120MPH from a blow tire is going to rip through the hull like a hot knife through butter. We could build planes out of titanium at 100X the cost of Al.
There is a Gulfstream overhaul facility at Westfield, MA. - Barnes Airport / ANG station
My brother was the maintenance director for a fleet of Gulf Streams owned by the Washington Corp. in Missoula, Montana back in the 1990’s and in 1992 they were named Flight Department of the Year by Professional Pilot magazine...
