Chapel Hill, N.C. Protesters on Monday night toppled the controversial "Silent Sam" statue on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
More than 300 protesters first gathered at the Peace and Justice Plaza at about 7 p.m., before marching to the base of the statue, calling for its removal. By 9:30 p.m., the statue was on the ground and the crowd erupted in cheers.
"Silent Sam" had been standing on the UNC campus since 1913.
Gov. Roy Cooper issued a statement Monday night, saying that he "understands that many people are frustrated by the pace of change and he shares their frustration, but violent destruction of public property has no place in our communities."
Protesters first sectioned off the area around the controversial statue with large banners, blocking it from view. Throughout the course of the evening, people in the crowd speculated about what might be going on behind the banners, but no one confessed to knowing the plan.
People chanted "stand up, fight back" and "hey, hey, ho, ho, this racist statue has got to go." Many also held signs.
WRAL's Candace Sweat said she saw a rope that was connected to something behind the banners, and that she heard a creak before the statue came down.
At one point, there were tense moments between protesters and police officers. Protesters deployed smoke canisters.
One person was arrested and charged with resisting arrest and for concealing one's face during a public rally.
Around 9 p.m., protesters left the base of "Silent Sam" and marched to Franklin Street, where they formed a large circle in the street, briefly blocking the intersection of Franklin and Columbia.
Once it was on the ground, protesters were shoveling dirt on top of it and stomping on it.

Fox just had a quick clip of the little Nazis pulling down the statue and I saw police STANDING around....not arresting, and I even saw one black officer LAUGHING!!!!!
I am RESPECT THE BLUE to the nth degree!!....did the mayor or governor tell them to stand down?
But why was one of them laughing?????
The cops (or at least their commanders) should be fired!
Not fired. Doxxed. Show the world who these pay check checking cashing cowards are.
They didn’t show up for a chanting mob of 300 screaming criminals?
1. Fire the entire campus police department that were on duty
2. Fire the Chief
3. Fire Campus President
4. Hire competent investigator to track down and prosecute every person who touched the statue
5. Any students present at march are automatically expelled
6. Cost to rebuild statue is added to student loans of all perpetrators.
7. Whiny, mealy mouthed Governor is replaced at earliest voter opportunity
Mob mentality. Try this outside of your protective campus and you will get arrested.
“...all people deserve to be treated with dignity,” says a protester? I guess all people except ones she disagrees with. Both sides are honored dead. It seems this modern generation lacks respect, embraces hate and violence, all the while calling themselves righteous.
Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness. Isaiah 5:20
People who forget history are doomed to repeat it.
Silent Sam... What statue is this?? Either way, its amazing that the Police were not there to stop the criminal mischief that occurred there. Universities and Cities have all been infected with this disease called Liberalism. If its not stopped, it will be at your door step soon.
“My ancestors fought for the Union, and I hold no brief for the Confederacy, but I absolutely hate this Orwellian rewriting of history by the Left today.”
Mine were on both sides. I hold no brief for Lincoln.
“Gov. Roy Cooper”
Nice going East coast filth.
WAIT, shouldn't the police have done that to disperse these rioters?
“The police were there watching the statue being torn from its base. According to reports, they were told not to interfere.”
The nation’s Chief Law Enforcement Officer does the same thing.
It's scary
Yes, tired&retired, I agree. Silent Sam has long been a POW in Chapel Hill. That nuthouse doesn’t deserve his dignified presence gracing its campus anymore.
“Protesters deployed smoke canisters
WAIT, shouldn’t the police have done that to disperse these rioters? “
They probably provided the smoke canisters to the criminals.
This is Chapel Hill, remember. Jesse Helms was wanting to put a fence around it and call it a zoo back in the 70's.
This really is an outrage.
This statue was no slave owner turned Confederate general but represented all the soldiers in the Confederacy who gave their lives to their home and people.
Argue the war all you want—it shouldn’t matter at such a memorial. Less then 1 percent of Confederate enlisted soldiers owned slaves. Argue their lost cause all you want, but these men were doing their duty as they saw it.
Really, reprehensible act of children in desperate need of an old-fashioned paddling.
An insult to today’s Southern people, especially to those who had an ancestor who fought in that war.
Despicable, hateful and disrespectful of the dead.
I don’t see how ANY conservative, North or South, could be in favor of this. Those who love America love her history, too, warts and all.
I’m retired and on a fixed income now, but I just gave $100 to my town’s Sons of Confederate Veterans.

When the Communists overturned the Tsarist regime only the very top ranks of the Tsarist Okhrana were eliminated. The rest joined Felix Dzerzhinsky’s secret police force. In sum, historically and universally, the police personality is a fascist mindset. It is no different in the good old USA.
Confederate and Union soldiers are considered co equal US military veterans under federal law. Therefore, any disrespect to a confederate veteran, memorial, statue etc is disrespect to EVERYBODY who ever wore the uniform.
“’Silent Sam’ is down: Protesters topple Confederate statue on UNC campus”
Emboldened by Nikki Haley.
It looks like many of the criminals in the mob were white.
The fault for the mob violence last night rests squarely on the shoulders of the white community. Weak white university and political “leaders” who colluded with the criminal gang to destroy historic artwork and to broadcast the message, “America was never great.”
And too, the fault lies with many white parents who have raised ignorant - truly ignorant - brats. If the parents had turned the damn television off and taught children right from wrong this would not be happening.
Right now the parents of these apprentice socialists need what they never gave their kids - a gallberry switch across their bare legs.
