CNN anchor Chris Cuomo said late Monday that Antifa should not be equated with white supremacists, arguing that "in a clash between hate & those who oppose it, those who oppose it are on the side of right" even if they resort to "petty violence."
"You attack cops, you slap the media, you are in the wrong, period," Cuomo said in a commentary on "Cuomo Prime Time." "But I argue to you tonight all punches are not equal morally."
"In the eyes of the law, yes. But in the eyes of good and evil, heres the argument: If youre a punk that comes to start trouble in a mask and hurt people youre not about any virtuous cause," he continued. "Youre just somebody thats going to be held to the standard of doing something wrong."
"But when someone comes to call out bigots and it gets hot, even physical, are they equally as wrong as the bigot theyre fighting? I say no. Fighting matters, too, theres no question about that. But drawing a moral equivalency between those espousing hate and those fighting because they both resort to violence emboldens hate, legitimizes hateful belief and elevates what should be stamped out."
"Antifa or whoever ... are malcontent or misguided, they are also wrong to hit, but fighting hate is right," Cuomo said later. "And in a clash between hate & those who oppose it, those who oppose it are on the side of right.
The perspective comes after a weekend of protests in Washington, D.C. and Charlottesville, Va. that included members of Antifa, which is short for "anti-fascist," attacking police and reporters covering a "Unite the Right 2" rally. The demonstrations came one year after deadly protests in Charlottesville that included one woman, Heather Heyer, allegedly being run over and killed by a man with reported Neo-Nazi ties.
Cuomo concluded on his primetime show that President Trump is "wrong to create a moral equivalency" between white supremacists and those who oppose them, even if "they resort to the same petty violence."
"Why people who show up to fight against bigots are not to be judged the same as the bigots," he said "Even if they do resort to the same petty violence. We should be our best. But I am arguing Trump is wrong to create a moral equivalency between bigots and those who oppose them, making them equal wrongs. Those hateful few who take solace and encouragement from the presidents efforts, my message is simple: Be aware there are many of us."
Cuomo once compared anti-fascist members to allied troops who stormed the beaches of Normandy on D-Day to fight Nazi soldiers in World War II in a tweet in August 2017.
What is it about the name Cuomo and flaming liberalism?
Genetic, maybe????
CNN YOU *ARE* HATE
CNN YOU *ARE* HATE
Once again, cuomo proves that he is a brain-addled nitwit. It shocks me that he even can remember to breathe. ...and to think the NY voters like and elect him. Sheesh!
Antifags are anarchist punks.
There is nothing good or right about them.
Those who oppose it (hate) are on the side of the right (meaning the conservative side)?
I'll have to agree with Cuomo on that one.
But I don't think that is what he really meant.
Call anyone a “nazi”, and you have license to destroy his property, injure, or kill him.
See how easy that is?
Scapegoating, just like ... the nazis.
Democrats railing against hate have a hard time following their own advice.
And yet, this fag, Cuomo has the gall to call US Nazis. This boy needs to be locked up before he hurts somebody or hurts himself. He’s sick in the head.
Yep, with their masked faces, and bats and bottles and rocks to throw.
Assaulting police and an NBC reporter (the second being a true irony as NBC refused to report it.)
This is what our media and Democrats support now.
Roving criminal gangs of lawbreaking thugs.
This is why Trump is right about (many of) them being our enemies.
There were only a few dozen white supremacists or whatever.
When Antifa couldn't bust *their* skulls, they attacked COPS.
Cuomo is standing behind assaulting police.
Didn't he see those banners?
The anti-cop chants?
Wow, that was an impressive contortionist act.
At the risk of inciting unwanted ire, I must say that I agree with Cuomo on a fundamental basis. I entirely disagree with his focus of saying this but the idea that those who fight for righteousness are justified in their struggle is quite correct.
As a country, we were justified in our fight against British tyranny.
We were justified in our fight against German Imperialism in WWI and German, Italian, and Japanese Fascism in WWII and Socialism in Korea and Viet Nam.
The divergence is in Antifa, who time and again prove themselves to be the bringers of hate and upheaval. They are the Brown Shirts of the 21st Century and are pressing on with their goal of imposing their brand of fascism on These United States.
Now that’s how you troll. (There wasn’t any bigotry to “fight”. They were attacking cops, as they have always done since before Occupy, and now they’ve added journalists.)
Antifa is also calling for the assassination of the President. Therefore, Cuomo & CNN are too.
This reads like a damn pretzel. Not surprising.
Mental illness is genetic.
Sounds like all gas chambers and ovens are not morally equal either.
Not when they are falsely accusing others of it.
