GENERAL CHARLES C KRULAK SPEECH
The word integrity itself is a martial word that comes to us from an ancient Roman army tradition. During the time of the 12 Caesars, the Roman army would conduct morning inspections. As the inspecting centurion would come in front of each legionnaire, the soldier would strike with his right fist the armor breastplate that covered his heart. The armor had to be strongest there in order to protect the heart from the sword thrusts and from arrow strikes. As the soldier struck his armor, he would shout "integritas", (in-teg-ri-tys) which in Latin means material wholeness, completeness, and entirety. The inspecting centurion would listen closely for this affirmation and also for the ring that well kept armor would give off. Satisfied that the armor was sound and that the soldier beneath it was protected, he would then move on to the next man. At about the same time, the praetorians or imperial bodyguard were ascending into power and influence. Drawn from the best "politically correct" soldiers of the legions, they received the finest equipment and armor. They no longer had to shout "integritas" to signify that their armor was sound. Instead, as they struck their breastplate, they would shout "Hail Caesar", to signify that their heart belonged to the imperial personage...not to their unit...not to an institution...not to a code of ideals. They armored themselves to serve the cause of a single man. A century passed and the rift between the legion and the imperial bodyguard and its excesses grew larger. To signify the difference between the two organizations, the legionnaire, upon striking his armor, would no longer shout "integritas", but instead would shout "integer" (in-te-ger). Integer means undiminished...complete...perfect. It not only indicated that the armor was sound, it also indicated that the soldier wearing the armor was sound of character...he was complete in his integrity...his heart was in the right place...his standards and morals were high...he was not associated with the immoral conduct that was rapidly becoming the signature of the praetorian guards. The armor of integrity continued to serve the legion well. For over four centuries they held the line against the marauding Goths and vandals. But by 383 AD, the social decline that infected the republic and the praetorian guard had its effects upon the legion. As a 4th century Roman General wrote, "When, because of negligence and laziness, parade ground drills were abandoned, the customary armor began to feel heavy since the soldiers rarely, if ever, wore it. Therefore, they first asked the emperor to set aside the breastplates and mail and then the helmets, so our soldiers fought the Goths without any protection for the heart and head and were often beaten by archers. Although there were many disasters, which lead to the loss of great cities, no one tried to restore the armor to the infantry. They took their armor off, and when the armor came off...so too came their integrity." It was only a matter of a few years until the legion rotted from within and was unable to hold the frontiers...the barbarians were at the gates. INTEGRITY...it is a combination of the words "integritas" (in-teg-ri-tas) and "integer" (in-te-ger). It refers to the putting on of armor, of building a completeness...a wholeness. A wholeness in character.

Although there were many disasters, which lead to the loss of great cities, no one tried to restore the armor to the infantry. Which sounds a bit weird, as I believe the soldiers wouldn't have been wanting to leave their armor behind once they came to places they knew they were going to get attacked with arrows.

Hi radu!
Sorry I missed you the last few nights, son's been over and then other 'stuff' happened!
We've cooled down nicely but triple digits are in our near future.
Did you make it to the museum today?
What else is up with you and the kittehs?

Hard Mysteries
August 5, 2018
The Lord is slow to anger but great in power.
Nahum 1:3
As my friend and I went for a walk, we talked about our love for the Bible. She surprised me when she said, Oh, but I dont like the Old Testament much. All of that hard stuff and vengeancegive me Jesus!
We might resonate with her words when we read a book like Nahum, perhaps recoiling at a statement such as, The Lord takes vengeance and is filled with wrath (Nahum 1:2). And yet the next verse fills us with hope: The Lord is slow to anger but great in power (v. 3).
When we dig more deeply into the subject of Gods anger, we understand that when He exercises it, Hes most often defending His people or His name. Because of His overflowing love, He seeks justice for wrongs committed and the redemption of those who have turned from Him. We see this not only in the Old Testament, as He calls His people back to Himself, but also in the New, when He sends His Son to be the sacrifice for our sins.
We may not understand the mysteries of the character of God, but we can trust that He not only exercises justice but is also the source of all love. We need not fear Him, for He is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him (v. 7).
Father God, You are good. You are loving and You are merciful. Help me to understand more fully some of the mysteries of Your redeeming love today.
Gods justice and mercy intersect at the cross.
Along with Nahum 1:3, we find eight other instances in the Old Testament where we read that the Lord is slow to anger (for example, Psalm 86:15; 103:8). But these passages also describe other attributes of God: He is abounding [or rich] in love (Exodus 34:6; Numbers 14:18; Psalm 145:8); He is gracious and compassionate (Joel 2:13; Jonah 4:2); and He is a forgiving God (Nehemiah 9:17). If God were not both just and merciful, we would be without hope. Why? Because everyone has turned away, all have become corrupt (Psalm 53:3). For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). None of us deserve His love, compassion, or forgiveness. Apart from Gods love, through the incredible sacrifice of His Son who paid the price for our sins, we would have no opportunity to receive eternal life. But God loved us so very much He gave His only Son (John 3:16).
How can you express your gratitude to God?

Howdy, PRO!
I haven’t been here much the last few nights either. I THINK life is about to get back to normal so there’ll be time to spend here again.
Glad you cooled off at last but dang the heat coming back. Triple digits aren’t fun.
Did you get to the shooting range?
Yes, I was at the museum today. My “mission” is a little different this time. The uniforms I clean up now will be put out in the museum - hanging along the walls - rather than upstairs. I don’t know the eras well at all and am uncomfortable with this job. They said if something is put in the wrong place they’ll just move it but I don’t want to put things in the wrong place to begin with. So I’ll be doing some homework this week to learn how to identify which uniforms belong in which eras.
A few pieces were placed today because they were easy enough to identify but the rest are hanging on the rack for next Sat.
Not much else going on now. Our elections are over at last so no more working on that stuff with the “R” women’s group. Life returns to normal. Whew!

Normalcy is REAL good about now. LOL! Been a crazy two weeks with too many early risings and it messed up the ol’ body clock pretty bad. I felt pretty bad all day yesterday but it’s past now.
Bummer you couldn’t make it to the range this week. I know y’all enjoy getting out there and I’d hoped your schedules would allow it this week.
The kittehs have been fairly well-behaved but they’ve had their moments. They’re kittehs ..... they’re gonna have their moments no matter what. LOL
