Union protestors and celebrity advocates have decided that waiters' tips aren't big enough...
As usual, those who want the government to decide that workers must be paid more insist that "women and minorities" are hurt by the market.
But waitress Alcieli Felipe is a minority and a woman. She says the celebrities and politicians should butt out.
Thanks to tips, Felipe says in my new internet video, she makes "$25 an hour. By the end of the year, $48,000 to $50,000."
She understands that if government raises the minimum, "It'll be harder for restaurants to keep the same amount of employees... (T)he busboy will be cut."
She's right...

Activists are unmoved. "The problem with tips is that they're very inconsistent,"
Normally I tip north of 20%, because I value good service, and as a former cook, remember how hard good waitresses work.
Unfortunately, our celebratory meal at Pizzeria Bianco in Phoenix forced me to go south of 15%. The restaurant is small, and it wasn't that busy at 2PM on Tuesday. The waitress carried no pad, did not bring out my beer, and forgot that I ordered it. My wife specifically asked for dressing on the side of her salad, that too, was forgotten. There was not so much as an "I'm sorry" when we pointed out these basic errors, and the waitress was generally disengaged and unfocused.
The pizza was good, but not in the same league as better pizza in the pizza belt (northeast). The sauce was superior, the crust a bit too crunchy, and the Sopressata was pedestrian. The appetizer (antipasto) had a combination I was unfamiliar with, but that was quite good.

Its not that I dont like waiters. I just believe that many waiters will still want tips unless they are paid considerably more than $15/hour.
And customers will continue to tip because they will feel guilty or cheap if they dont.

Unions want to take their dues out of their paychecks rather than have them pay cash which would be unpopular...

Same here in Texas, for now. But if we go the way of Seattle, no more.

you pay up front before getting your item and they have you slide your credit card through ???
The only place that I have seen that is in McDonald's and there's no tip there. Or a local pizza joint as an "eat in" and the tip is optional which I never leave because you bus the table(s) yourself.
I have never seen that anywhere else. Can you name names so that I know what to avoid?

One of my favorite waiters at an establisment I would frequent in my younger days said he made high 5 figures annually working Friday through Sunday only. Good waitstaff at good establishments can make good money. This ‘living wage’ nonsense will eliminate this.

Nope. I work hard for my pay. Putting money in a tip jar by a cash register because I ordered my food and I picked it up. Oh, and yes, I’m a Brooklyn-American who escaped to WA with my family. And your problem is what exactly? Okay, so I’m Jewish as well and do not go there.

yeah. I remember going over to jolly old England and trying to tip the waitress in a bar. She declined but asked me to buy her a pint, instead. well, OK.
