Much of the heat thats gripped California and hastened the spread of deadly wildfires recently is due to a strange but familiar shift in the jet stream one thats haunted the West with threatening fire conditions in the past and could cause more hot, dry spells in the future, especially with a changing climate.
The jet stream, the river of wind high above the Northern Hemisphere, has been weaker and wavier in the past few weeks, scientists say. Instead of pushing weather systems along as it usually does, its allowing the patterns to stagnate.
Were seeing this mix of conditions across North America and Europe, but theyre all connected, said Jennifer Francis, a professor at Rutgers University who studies atmospheric circulation. The weather patterns are just stuck. Theyre trapped.
The shift in the jet stream thats driving the stagnation, say Francis and other climate scientists, is almost certainly tied to global warming.
Its just one of the ways that climate change is probably contributing to the spree of fires in California that has killed eight people and destroyed more than 1,000 homes.

Right on. Thanks for the info.
My chicken bones say the gods are upset with you heretics burning fossil fuels and we are going to suffer burning heat.
Repent you sinners and build more wind turbines!
You nailed it.
Then It should be easy to demonstrate if they are that certain, but they can't and they won't....
The cure will be worse than the disease.....just listen to Zuckerburg’s 2017 commencement speech to Harvard grads........global government is the only way to combat this challenge.
I thought this spate of fires was ARSON?.....................
Its actually true. CA is much dryer most recent years than its been in a few human lifetimes. More brittle dead brush for fuel. CA has always had fires, before man. Some seeds only sprout in fire temperatures.
We dont know anything about climate changes. Climate always changes and does for eternity.
But it is true that for a couple hundred years we seem to be in a much dryer cycle out west. It doesnt take a corrupt consensus scientist to figure it out. It just IS. How should we humans react?
- maybe desalinization plants
- maybe stop building homes in rural dry brush areas
- maybe create reservoirs instead of bullet trains
- maybe some attempt to keep populations of people who arent helping and dont belong here out of our states
You know, normal solutions, no blame or gouging.
The beetles go for the least healthy trees. A lot of trees arent getting enough water for optimal health. Its kind of a cycle.
I think we need to be more practical about this and realistic. The west is getting more deserty. Its not our fault but we should probably react to it in sane ways.
The recent bloom in flammable biomass from the torrential rains that ended the drought couldn’t possibly have anything to do with it.
Climate change advocates using arson to advance their cause???
Have they found the fingerprints of Muslim jihadis, who had a plan of action for attacking the USA that included setting the forests on fire?
a strange but familiar shift
Sounds like an oxymoron to me. Strange but familiar?
It seems that in past years since environmentalists have succeeded in the preventing of forest clearing and encouraged the heavy accumulation of fallen trees, brush, etc., forest fires have been frequent and more severe.
That part we played a part in. The road to hell is always paved with good intentions. Also, not planning for these things. Insisting on building in the hills for 2 reasons: 1) beautiful views for the well off and 2) cheaper homes way outside a metropolis.
We are at fault for our behaviors but we didnt cause the dryness. We do have to live with it.
We haven't had any big fires within 10 or 20 miles of our house this year, but we are smelling a lot of smoke. It is amazing to me how many people that I have seen throwing burning cigarette butts out of their windows in the last couple months. A high percentage have been from people with out of state plates from British Columbia, Oregon, Idaho, California, Nevada, and strangely Texas and Utah... all places where they are also having drought issues this year. Mostly this has been causing just grass fires along the interstate, but I have seen lit cigarettes being thrown out of windows on the rural road below our house as well and we are completely surrounded by tall firs with very dry under growth.
The Nut on BBC was all Extreme Weather but never say a word about why so few Hurricanes. Weather is now Extreme Weather ,Forest Fires are now Wild Fores ,LOL
Winter: weather is not climate
Summer: weather is climate
Ok. Got it.
Brian Sussman, who is a certified meteorologist, made a very astute observation on his KSFO morning show about these “chicken little” scientists who keep crying about “man-made” climate change, based on something he was told:
What information are these people ignoring in their pronouncement on the subject?
No arson, just a hot wheel bearing.
Climate change is code for illegal aliens.
