In honor of the Rush Limbaugh Show reaching 30 years old today, I would like Freepers to post and collect their memories. Memories of when they first listened to the Rush Limbaugh Show, and why you kept on listening to it.
I'll start...
It was 1993. Bill Clinton was elected and he was on television, and the radio discussing his budget. He was talking about all the great plans that he had to remove man from space, end the "boondoggle" of the "Freedom " space station, and mothball the space shuttles so the money could be used "for the children". He was promoting what a great boom to the American worker that NAFTA and extended relations with China would be. He talked about how he was going to restore ethics to Washington, DC.
Every show and every radio station was gushing with praise for this man. It was sickening. The women looked like they were fawning and near fainting near him. The men was nodding vigorously and everyone was talking in excited tones about how America will lead the world by undoing Reaganism.
There was only one man who had a contrary view. That was Rush Limbaugh.
So while the rest of America praised the new America led by Clinton, and was looking forward to the new trade agreements with NAFTA and China, I was huddled in my living room, listening to Rush on the radio on a dark and stormy West Virginia night. Only Rush gave voice to how I felt.
1985. Stopped in with my Navy crew for an RON. Visited my parents and they were listening to Rush. Been a fan ever since.
ROFLOL!!
Whenever was his first day on WGST (Atlanta). Bush was still President.
Anyway, he replaced a local guy and I was angry. Not just for that, but because it was a truncated (2 hour) show recorded the DAY BEFORE!
He said to give him 6 weeks before making a final judgement. I did.
It helped that they finally presented him LIVE and from 12:00-3:00. Been there ever since.
He was doing something he called "A caller abortion." He'd get someone calling in then with a toilet flushing sound effect playing, would hang up on the callers.
I discovered Rush in the summer of 1992. It was during the 1992 presidential race that I watched CNN celebrate the biggest anti American scumbag in the history of politics, Bill Clinton, I was beginning to think that America has left me behind. I realized that the whole media was left and I felt hopeless. Fortunately as I was driving through western Wyoming on my way to Florida I heard someone on AM radio talking about lesbian synchronized swimming and the olympics; it was Rush. I started to look for this guy everyday after. After a few weeks of Rush, I soon realized their were many just like me who were dying to hear someone in the mainstream media with a similar world view. Thanks to Rush, my morale drastically improved and I survived the Clinton years.
1992 Cape canaveral florida
Right after the g Gordon liddy show
I was mad when I first heard him
Then I couldnt stop
The first I heard Rush was in 1988 on the 50,000 watt flame thrower in Sacramento, KFBK. Bo Snerdly was good and later along came Dan Sullivan, the beautiful hispanic girl, Dan’s Bake Sale and a whole host of others. The libs tried to match him and every damn one of them folded.
Megga dittos, Rush
Congrats on your conversion! We all got here sooner or later!
Holy Shiite. What a story.
I became a listener in ‘93.
There’s no going back once yer hooked!
Off and on through the years, but for the last ten years or so, have had a desk job where I can listen during the day :)
1992. Graveyard shift. 12A to 3A local delayed. Flitting through dial. Spatula City. Hooked.
I think the intended term is: lurks.
1989. My ‘87 Alliance got bent, other driver’s fault. Loaner was a 70’s PO$ with an AM radio. Grumblingly tried it, and heard somebody talking sense! There I was, rolling down the street shouting “Yess!” every minute or so.
Ping
my aunt told me about his radio show- i was pretty apolitical at the time .
We were driving thru Pennsylvania and his show was the only thing we could pick up in a “dead” zone.
So after about 5 minutes I said “ Oh, this is the guy Auntie was talking about!” This must have been 20-25 years ago, too.
My husband makes a point of listening to him almost every day.
It was back in the 1990s. A guy with massive crush on me (a wide pool, so his anonymity is assured) asked me if I ever watched Rush Limbaugh.
Whats a Rush Limbaugh? I didnt even know that was the name of a person.
Then, I watched the TV show and liked what I saw. We were in San Diego back then, so it was on pretty late, but worth it.
Then I moved to a more remote area in which TV reception was non existent. I could not get motivated for the cable thing (what?! You have to PAY to watch television? Madness).
So, I did the only sensible thinggot one of those old giant antennas that you could rotate. My actual boyfriend installed it. To this day, I can still hear him muttering: All for that guy.
Somewhere around when you first discovered him - he had a TV show at the time....I still have a Rush Limbaugh tie.....
