What countries have the longest life expectancies? Author: Marina Pitofsky, USA TODAY

Updated: 3:21 PM EDT July 27, 2018

Okinawa, Japan is often known as "the land of immortals," with hundreds of residents over 100 years old. Last year, the number of people 90 years old and above in Japan hit the two million mark.

So when Chiyo Miyako died Sunday as the oldest person in the world at 117 years old, she was certainly not alone at her age in Japan. The new oldest person in the world is Kane Tanaka, a 115-year-old woman living in Fukuoka, Japan, according to media reports. The world's oldest man celebrated his 113th birthday Wednesday in Hokkaido, Japan. According to the World Health Organization, in 2018, the average life expectancy in Japan is 84.2 years old, with men living an average of 81.1 years and and women living an average of 87.1 years.

What is the island nation's secret to long, healthy lives?

Experts often cite the Japanese diet as a reason for the country's population of "centenarians," or people older than 100 years. When the Japanese do eat meat, they eat mostly heart-healthy fish, rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Other popular foods include tofu, seaweed and octopus, all of which carry a low-risk for some cancers and arteriosclerosis.

Japan's healthcare system is also one of the most accessible in the world. The government pays 70 percent of the cost of all health procedures and up to 90 percent if you are a low-income citizen.

So according to CBS and USA Today we here don't live long because we don't have free government healthcare and are now in a state of 'despair'..

"The United States's 2018 life expectancy is 78.5 years, with men living an average of 76 years and women living an average of 81. This is a drop from 2016 and 2017, during which the average American life expectancy was 79.3 years. Experts say this is attributable to anything from the opioid epidemic to rising rates of "dispair."

Err, I wonder if it is any kind of a factor that Japan is a very homogenous country (including concerning their healthcare).

Both sides of my family have substantial longevity....almost all have gotten into their 80s and more than a few have gotten into their 90s.

Having a background in medicine I'm convinced that life expectancy in the US is,to a substantial degree,a function of "lifestyle".

Thanks. I stopped watching when I saw the Greek guy in his 90s lighting up a cigarette and saying that he drinks wine daily and eats bowls of ice-cream.

Yep. That works for me!

Twenty more years to go!

In late July, police discovered that Sogen Kato, who would have been 111 and was thought to be Tokyo's oldest man, had actually been dead for 32 years and his decayed body was still lying in his home.

Police have arrested his granddaughter for suspected abandonment and pension fraud.

My mother-in-law passed away back in May. She was 97. My father passed away this morning. He was 89. Maybe I go at some age in between the two.

Lifestyle is important but I’m putting my money on genes. Of course, genes affect lifestyle.

Ask a FOIA of your state medicaid agency, and of Medicare, for the number of people over 90 and their age who are active on those programs. Try to match that with what the Census Bureau says.

Here is an opportunity for the new, new math.

I actually read a good article about it. There has been a study on Keith and one of the things is genetics. He hails from a long line of hard drinking and hard partying folks.

Your mother- in law 97?

I would have preferred an early death for myself or would have died a slow death ...
