Is Genesis psychology or history? A response to Jordan Peterson
by Lita Cosner and Paul Price
Published: 26 July 2018 (GMT+10)
We recently listened to a lecture series on the psychological significance of the biblical stories by Dr. Jordan Peterson, professor of psychology at Toronto University. It has taken a long time to distill the hours of lectures down to a form that can be examined in something as short as this article. It was a daunting task! However, the first lecture alone has over 2.5 million views on YouTube, indicating that Petersons lectures have a real audience, so it is worth talking about them here. His lectures are generally admired by his devotees, in much the same way that faithful churchgoers regard the sermons of their pastor; however, we found them intensely tedious, rambling, and hard to follow.
Petersons view of fundamentalists Peterson believes that people who read the Bible historically or scientifically are fundamentalists who misunderstand the purpose of the biblical stories. He makes occasional comments that reveal a deep contempt for us. For example,
The poor fundamentalists, theyre trying to cling to their moral structure, and I understand why, because it does organize their societies, and it organizes their psyche, so theyve got something to cling to....

Article’s last paragraph:
“One would hope that Christians would show sufficient discernment to see the errors in Petersons presentations. But the size of his audience indicates there are probably many who would otherwise call themselves evangelical but have been duped by his mendacity.
To them, we give a warning: Petersons method of interpreting Scripture according to his pre-existing beliefs, and his preaching of our ability to choose our own noble aim, is serpentine, not Christian.
Even if pop culture wants to view Peterson as some sort of conservative voice of religious reason, he is actually promoting a worldview which is diametrically opposed to Christianity.”
The premisis is wrong.
The question should be is Genesis myth or history
What an incredibly thoughtless statement this is - how can one possibly even begin to speculate that there is linkage between the number of YouTube hits and - well, anything.
From this site:

“The word listed above (premises) is probably the correct spelling for the word that you entered (premisis). This is just an educated guess based on commonly misspelled words. To double check that this is the correct word you can use the resources below to find the definition of premises, antonyms for premises, synonyms for premises, quotes relating to premises and other information about premises.

[The poor fundamentalists, theyre trying to cling”]
Hahahahaha. Obama said similar things about bitter clingers.
Weep not for us, but for yourself.
We’ll be just fine.
And Peterson is no theologian. I dont recall him claiming to be. IIRC he only claims to demonstrate parallels in Jungian Psychology and images and allegories is Biblical stories. I dont recall him doing anything else. The fact that he also explains all this in the context of the attack of Cultural Marxism on Western Civilization. If you learn his story it is his enemies that created him.
Peterson still struggles with faith and reason. But he is an ally in many other respects particularly on our current social condition. No need to be dismissive because of those disagreements.
No good reason that it can’t be history.
I’m not a fundamentalist so don’t go for the literal interpretation, but I would point out that the Bibile has been around a lot longer than CNN.
I have no problem following his lectures. They are enlightening, I find.
Genesis: HIS story!
History!
Scripture clinger here!!!
:)

Genesis clearly falls within the genre of historical narrative.
What you have with the Old Testament is a collection of roughly four sections, which came in draft form over several hundred years by several individuals writing the text by what they were told (stories often passed around the tribal unit). Because of the number of tribes occupying the land of Judah, you might have a couple of people hearing the story and trying to write it by the description they were told.
It should be pointed out as well...that the original Hebrew version had 24 ‘books’. The Catholic version had 46 ‘books’. The Greeks had 50 ‘books’. Most of these did originate as Hebrew texts, some were Greek, and a handful were Aramaic.
I should point out here that via the land of India....there is the legend of Manu, which details out the same story as Noah. There are probably several stories via the Old Testament which can be found in other lands.
Actually, I intended premise
Moses penned Genesis and he was not a first hand witness...The Creator told Moses what to pen... Peterson is clueless as to Whom he is questioning.... and Peterson has NO clue what Genesis actually declares. It is the beginning of the history of those that were elected to be the blood line to Christ ... and those that of the devil attempted to disrupt... without success.
>>But he is an ally in many other respects particularly on our current social condition.
A big part of our current social condition is the infiltration of Humanist beliefs into Christianity and any place where the two disagree, it is the traditional Christian view that must be ignored in the interest of relevance.
Any struggle between faith and reason are really just struggles between faith and doubt because creation operates on reason and is most of what is called General Revelation. Look at the honeybee and all the strange things that must happen to make honeybees functional. You cant gradually mutate into that over millions of years.
My doubt makes me want to accept conventional evolution because it makes sense in my purely natural world. My faith makes me want to know that God really did make it in 6 days. My reason says that it could be either, or both. We believe in miracles in the rest of the Bible, but the current social condition of our culture demands that we draw the line at creation and tell God NO!.
