An Oregon high school student who was suspended over a shirt that touted President Trump’s proposed border wall has agreed to settle his lawsuit after the school agreed to pay $25,000 for his legal fees and have its principal write him an apology.

Addison Barnes, who graduated this year from Liberty High School in Hillsboro, Ore., outside Portland, filed a lawsuit in federal court in May alleging that the school violated his First Amendment rights when it punished him for wearing the shirt to a politics class discussion about immigration. The shirt said “Donald J. Trump Border Wall Construction Co.,” and “The Wall Just Got 10 Feet Taller.”

Can you imagine your son or daughter being forced to look at tee shirts with images of Obama or Hillary, ....

The school would get tired of cleaning up the vomit.

This is a bad decision. Can you imagine your son or daughter being forced to look at tee shirts with images of Obama or Hillary, in addition to keeping his/her mouth shut all day?

This is a fair decision. Che Guevara T's are accepted by administrators. Hillary and Obama images are accepted. But a Trump t-shirt would likely cause an issue, just like this wall t-shirt did.

Absent a dress code banning ALL printed T's, this decision is as close to correct as can be. Either everyone has the same rights, or only the select few have elevated privilege. I am firmly on the side of rights.

I disagree. LIBERALS are in charge at the majority of public schools. I think it can be well established that the kids that are ordered to take their t-shirts off are the ones with conservative messages.

Now, it might make sense to ban ALL T shirts with any kind of statement. But, LIBERALS would F that up too.....somehow! Just give em a little time.

I’d tell my kids to get over it and look for ways to convert the heathen.

“Addison Barnes, who graduated this year from Liberty High School in Hillsboro, Ore.”

I find it truly ironic that the school is named “Liberty!” Since when is a Marxist Administration connected in any way with “liberty?”

“Per leftist requirements, the principal will now get even angrier.”

Or he may be asked to leave, have his overly generous employment contract bought out, leaving him free to go on to the next feckless school system.

When I was in school the boys could wear t shirts but they couldn’t have any sayings or pics on them. Plain t shirts only. If they allow sayings and pics then they have to allow any shirt that’s not pornographic, etc. Yes, that includes Trump or Obama shirts. They can’t stop one and allow the other. It’s pretty simple. Just stop allowing the sayings and pics.

They should’ve required that the principle’s apology be an essay on free speech.

The principal needs to be fired and made to pay the $25K.
Instead, he gets a resume enhancer.

I wonder if my old Pink Floyd t-shirt would get me suspended today?

"I wonder if my old Pink Floyd t-shirt would get me suspended today?"

Personally, I'd choose a shirt with a copy of the The Who's album cover for Who's Next?

As long as students are allowed to wear t-shirts with slogans and images, then the school cannot censor political messages. But how about returning to decent dress codes, then the problem would take care of itself.

You got it. There was a reason for dress code.

There was a SCOTUS ruling in the late 60’s regarding high-skrool students wearing black arm bands to class to protest the Vietnam War.

In that case, brought by Leftits, the SCOTUS upheld their right to do so under the First Amendment.

Reap what you’ve sown, Lefties!

$25,000, an apology, and a resignation would have been even better. Thanks SMGFan.
