The Department of Homeland Security has dramatically raised worksite enforcement to deter employers from hiring cheap illegal workers.
Since October, the agencys Homeland Security Investigations unit has checked employment records at 6,093 worksites, up from 1,716 in the prior fiscal year from October 2016 to the end of September 2017. The current pace of checks in 2018 is almost a five-fold increase from the prior year and included 100 stores in the 7-Eleven chain and 77 companies in California.
The agency has made 675 criminal arrests of managers or supervisors, plus 984 administrative arrests of illegals in the last nine months, versus 139 criminal arrests and 172 administrative arrests during the prior 12 months, according to a DHS statement. That is a five-fold increase in criminal arrests and a sixfold increase in administrative arrests.
In 2018, the DHS agency has also conducted several large-scale raids, including a meatpacker in Tennessee, and a meatpacker and landscaping firm in Ohio.
Amid President Donald Trumps high-pressure economy, the enforcement actions push employers to fire illegals on their staff and to raise wages for Americans.

Correct, but I’m not saying we should hire temporary foreign workers for construction. Those jobs are reserved for citizens or people with legitimated green cards awaiting citizenship.
I think it comes down to the following: If you paid enough, would you get Americans to do the work? I do believe this true for construction work of all kinds. If your wages are too low to get Americans to do the work, but an increased reasonable wage would, you still can’t violate the law by hiring illegals. Follow the law! We’re all REQUIRED to.
I’m not so sure about farm work. Picking vegetables, fruit, etc. is just something most people won’t do.
Of course, everyone has their price, no?
But how much would have to pay AMERICAN farm hands to pick lettuce? If you did, food prices go up. Since these kinds of jobs are also seasonal, I don’t know if anyone looking for a career would want them. Construction and other work is always going on. A general contractor who doesn’t always have project currently going on is probably not going to make it anyway.
But a farm?
And even so, I’m not opposed to these jobs being citizen only, but I’m not sure we can find them. Yes, they used to do it. And there’s a lot to be said for hard work outdoors, fresh air, build strong bodies etc., but I think the Millennials and Generation (? current new one) are too lazy or not motivated enough.
Again, I could see giving temporary seasonal agricultural visas to Mexicans that the employer needs to guarantee to assist return to Mexico when done, or legally transfer contract to another farmer, say, further North whose crop is now ready for harvest.
This is great — but I will truthfully say — I worry that we can’t find the Americans needed to do some of this work. Not all of it, but some of it. I think construction would go to some able bodied folks, but the hotel work, the restaurants, etc — it would be a challenge.
As a health care provider, I see it everyday — Americans as a lot are in pathetic shape. Young kids who have any type of brain are educated and gainfully employed, while the rest of them are fat assed, drugging and overdosing, or general no-goods, or liberal snowflakes.
I don’t know — not saying we can’t made this change ...but it will take time and a paradigm shift after all these years of relying on foreign workers. But it’s got to be done.
“Arresting-employers-of-illegal-aliens PING”
I don’t know...
...getting rid of illegals is great, but, arresting citizens for hiring them?
It’s a bit too much.
It’s the gov’s job to keep illegals out, they’re not doing their job, not held accountable for it, and now blame business and hold THEM accountable.
There’s just something a little off there, but I’m glad the gov is doing SOMETHING.
That’s why I said “also.” I was moving on to another sub-issue.
Another also: The restaurant industry in NYC would collapse if they enforce this all at once. They should probably build in a gradual process.
The food world is very trendy now, and if there were a ladder where you could move from dishwasher to busboy to waiter and on up, I think many young Americans would grab those jobs. They seem to be able to take a lot of suffering and abuse just to work in a restaurant and learn the ropes.
This is good news. One thing I wonder about from a legal liability standpoint on the part of companies, is whether or not using “E-Verify” is considered a ‘safe harbor’ or not. If so, you might start seeing a lot more companies jumping on the E-verify bandwagon.
“Best election, best POTUS, evah!”
Thank you Lord!
Wasn't aware of that, but it being more goobermint fubar, I shoulda known .. thanks.
I've hired construction hands in the past when my business was still up/running, but never any wetbacks.
Always made a point of discriminating a priori.
So sue me ;-)
This is really winning for our side!
Amid President Donald Trumps high-pressure economy, the enforcement actions push employers to fire illegals on their staff and to raise wages for Americans.
Its against the law to hire illegal aliens...
You break the law you get arrested...
“You break the law you get arrested...”
Or you get fined.
A tight labor market will lead to higher wages and greater productivity, which is why a tight labor market is a good thing.
However, if unlimited labor can be imported, the labor market will never get tight, and we will not get these benefits.
WELL!! It’s about danged time!!! I’ve been fuming about this issue for a long time!!!!

This was largely unreported. We are removing the magnet of employment for illegal aliens while millions sit on the duff sucking off the dole. I assure you that if we start putting employers in prison, this illegal alien migration will stop cold
They should place some of that focus on eastern Washington farms.
Sweet! It’s a Fiddlstix!
Wow, they are actually arresting managers? I would have been fine with just fining these companies $100,000 for breaking the law.
Surprised that self righteous RINOS like Rubio and clan haven’t been screaming at the top of their lungs, that their fellow Chamber members are getting arrested.
I agree. These employers are traitors.
Wow—I wasn’t referring to your specific teaching in the least.
But if you want to be snotty about it, how hard is it to explain a larger surface area for more absorption?
