The Odessa waiter whose story about being called a terrorist by a customer spurred national attention last week now admits it was all a hoax.



The waiter, Khalil Cavil, 20, admitted he wrote the racist note himself in a Monday interview with the Odessa American, where he apologized to a reporter “because I did lie to you.” “I did write it,” Cavil said, refusing to explain why. ...

Cavil’s call followed a press release from Saltgrass Steak House revealing the hoax. Cavil had lied about receiving the note calling him a terrorist while working at the restaurant on July 14.

Terry Turney, COO of Saltgrass, issued this: “After further investigation, we have learned that our employee fabricated the entire story. The customer has been contacted and invited back to our restaurant to dine on us. Racism of any form is intolerable, and we will always act swiftly should it occur in any of our establishments. Falsely accusing someone of racism is equaling disturbing.” ...



... Many on Facebook were offering money to Cavil who said he was working to attend college in Dallas this fall. Cavil said donations totaled about $1,000.

When I’ve been in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, I’ve seen Saltgrass Steak House - but never ate at one.

The one on North 281 in San Antonio is excellent. It almost always packed with wait times of 30 minutes normal. Don’t let that deter you however. The food is great. I suggest the coconut-covered shrimp but you cannot go wrong with anything on the menu.

I have been going to Saltgrass for years.
Nothing but professional waitstaff.
Good consistent quality of food.
Steak salad and Chicken Fried Steak are great.
Also cool Texas history on the walls. Signs from cattle raisers, land companies, rodeos from around the state.

Worth the stop.

The note says "We don't tip terrorist," not... "We don't tip terroristS" or "We don't tip A terrorist."

Obviously, the person who wrote this does not have a good command of the English language. The waiter must not have grown up in the US.

When it comes to fake racism and anti-Muslim stories the press is like Charlie Brown and the football. They fall for it every time. Either they are idiots, or they reason that they get their every-buddy-is-racist/anti-Muslim point across and nobody notices the retraction four days later.

When my son was the president of the student body at Claremont McKenna College, a professor vandalized her own car with anti-semitic and homophobic words. There were protests on campus, they had to halt all classes for a couple of days- everyone was up in arms. Then the truth came out. She was dumb enough to do it in a parking lot near the school and 2 students were sitting in a car nearby. My son had to make statements to the media about it and was in the center of the maelstrom. (that's another story)

Ever since then (2004), I have been suspicious of reports of this nature. It is absolutely incredible how many of them turn out to be fake and faked by the supposed victim.
