2020 Republican convention goes to Charlotte, the lonely and reluctant bidder in age of Trump

As Americans fought in recent weeks over whether restaurants should refuse to serve top aides to President Trump, an entire city has been debating what it means to host his convention for reelection.

Charlotte won the rights to the 2020 Republican National Convention on Friday. But that's largely because it faced little serious competition. And even before the victory was announced in Austin, Texas, this thriving, progressive urban island in the Trump-friendly South was suffering some buyer's remorse.

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles, a Democrat, says the decision to host the convention was the hardest she has tackled — "not just as a mayor but as a mom and as a friend" to her community.

To quell anger from her constituents, she has vowed that she will not deliver a welcome speech, an extraordinary break from custom. Other local leaders are going further, promising to use the occasion to speak out against Trump.

"If it were Mitt Romney or damn near anybody besides Donald Trump," the debate would have been "much less heated," said Larken Egleston, a Democratic council member.

What the hell! No cities with republican mayors? Why are these rats getting the money?

I am from just outside there originally and liked going back periodically.

That was up until several years ago. Things seemed to go downhill to me. Hard to say why. I have 0 desire to go any more.

Duke power isn’t that great an outfit to work for according to a friend whose company was bought by DP.

The LA Times is all Hate Trump all the time. Even their recipes are full of it:

Soak fruit in a stock pot over medium high heat. Add water, apple juice, soy sauce, apricot preserves, brown sugar, garlic powder, and dry mustard. Hate Trump. Bring to a simmer, stirring frequently to dissolve brown sugar. Reduce heat, and continue simmering for 40 minutes, or until fruit is completely soft. Trump is a racist xenophobe. Remove from heat and allow to cool.

Thank you for filling in the blank spaces for me. Naturally, the media never highlighted the deadbeat dems. All I ever hear is about coal ash, coal ash. Not a peep about the DNC stiffing North Carolinians.

I wish the Republican party would have their convention in Las Vegas - a place that appreciates the color of money. Charlotte is filled to overflowing with democrats who will make life hell for convention goers.

It’s kind of discouraging to read this, Miami, everywhere should be glad to welcome the Republicans, at least, a lot of places.

You lose the elections, we like you. Not a good message.

Hold it in Palm Beach!

Use Mar-a-Lago for many of the festivities.

Great list!

I’d select Grand Rapids or Green Bay

Combine the convention with a round-the-clock MAGA rally!!

Sadly the state of highly charged Trump hate will make the 2020 GOP convention even worse than the riot torn 1968 Democrat convention

The one man who is trying to save this nation is treated like a POS, but the people who continue to sell this nation out from our elected politicians, the bureaucrats and the MSM keep going on without any kind of condemnation or punishment! Make me so f***ing MAD!

I took my son on his first trip to NYC this week for the Billy Joel 100 and to see Sweeney Todd. I didn’t allow the tv to be on any local or national news while in the hotel but were exposed to it on the elevators at Hotel Pennsylvania and the seething hatred that came out of the monitor and TV’s at the airport etc.... It was disgusting.

Hotel Pennsylvania? Across from Penn Station? My mother spent her honeymoon there (not with my father; her first husband was killed in the war).

How old is your son by the way? Sweeney Todd isn’t for kids! NYC gets the same news as the rest of the country.

Yes. Pennsylvania 6-5000 it was ok but small and under construction. The play was fantastic and my very mature just under 15yr old handled the subject matter well.
