HIGH, WIDE AND HANDSOME

This 1937 RKO movie musical teamed Jerome with Oscar Hammerstein again, and it was an attempt to recapture the magic – and the financial success – of “Show Boat.” It bombed and is mercifully forgotten today.

“CAN I FORGET YOU?”

America’s favorite baritone crooner tackled this song shortly after the movie came out. It’s a fine version.

HIGH, WIDE AND HANDSOME: “CAN I FORGET YOU?”

Even a terrible show can produce a few fine songs. This one caught on even though the movie didn’t.

Lincoln Mayorga was a perennial pianist in the Los Angeles studio scene, both pop and classical. Here he arranges the song for Marni Nixon, a singer of both pop and lieder, whose career was built around singing on movie soundtracks for women who couldn’t. This beautiful arrangement sounds like it was written by Schubert. Your screen will go blurry at the end.
