Gun Restrictions Prompt use of Boar Spear to Stop Mountain Lion Attack
Ammoland ^ | 6 July, 2018 | Dean Weingarten

On 8 September, 2013, a problem mountain lion attacked Rick Coutts wife, Sandy Flores. The animal's purpose was to kill and eat her. The big cat had shown increasing interest in Sandy Flores over the previous months. The last time, it had snarled and slashed at Sandy. She managed to repel it with a machete.

Rick considered getting a rifle. The couple lives in a remote location on the West coast of Vancouver Island, in Canada. Canadian regulations and testing requirements were stringent and prolonged. He believed he would never obtain the permit in time. The danger was ever present and acute. For someone in a remote area, finding a class, scheduling to be in it, then doing the test and waiting for a permit could take months.

Rick settled for a Cold Steel Boar Spear, purchased over the counter. He kept it close by, leaning against the cabin wall.

Cold Steel Boar Spear

I have a Cold Steel boar spear. It is a serious weapon. The spearhead is over 18 inches long. The shaft is six feet. The overall length is 89 inches, or 7 feet, 5 inches.

The coverage of the story in the United States was pitiful. There were a few brief accounts on some Internet sites. The international coverage, especially in the UK, was excellent.  The most informative article was an in depth interview done by Brinkman Forest Ltd. in Canada. Rick Coutts is one of their best workers.

You ought to read the Canadian Charter. It lists all sorts of rights and then gives the government the “Notwithstanding Clause” that allows the government to violate those rights at will.

Meaning they have no actual rights.

Typical - it’s the unhinged UK law.

The big cat had shown increasing interest in Sandy Flores over the previous months.

I think I see the problem here.

Rick and Sandy do not want their story to become a reason to fear and hate mountain lions. They say this was just one bad lion.

What was bad about it? It did what mountain lions do. Do they think other lions eat carrots and kale?

Little attention has been given to the fact that Canada's restrictive firearms laws led to Rick resorting to a spear. Who knows what might have happened if Sandy had a pistol in a holster instead of bear spray hooked in her belt?

Yeah, Canada's gun laws suck but she couldn't find the pepper spray on her belt and probably couldn't have found a pistol there either the way the lion stalked and surprised her. Which is exactly how lions that aren't vegans hunt.

They had a chance to scare this lion far away from them months before. A gun would have been very useful for that then. Since Canaduh doesn't allow that a very large firecracker might have sufficed. Or are those illegal too? Could be. Point is, wild animals give wide berth to humans they think are hunting them and they don't know the difference between the report of a gun and an explosive.

swing the butt of the spear around as a blocking movement and/or club...and try again.

Don’t have to. I can use my dad’s Winchester Defender 12ga. pump action, eight in the tube and one in the chamber. He alternates 00buck with slug.

Its ok. Its not a semi-automatic boar spear. However, we must be on our guard to prevent people from possessing bump shafts for these killing machines.

Sasha Siemel killed over 300 jaguars in his life with a spear and a jaguar is considerably bigger than a cougar. Masai warriors take on lions with spears and a large lion is 3-5 times heavier than a cougar. This is a situation where your first mistake is your last.

That is for certain. Miss the lion and it's likely to swat the spear right out of your hands or pin the end of it to the ground as it leaps over it to you.

Nice reason to have hunting buddies with their own spears. Then maybe you have a bit more margin to make a mistake and live to learn from it.

Yes, several. Experienced hunter-warriors too. Probably a bit outside the means of two tree planters to have along with them on a daily basis.

“I guess in Canada they don’t have the right...”

Period! I’m a little over an hour from the Canadian border. Every couple of months we drive up to B.C. to buy my wife’s insulin which is a fraction of the cost here in Washington and doesn’t require a prescription. Other than that I hate going up there; the whole place is creepy. I can’t see much difference from any other European Socialist country. Even on the sunniest day of summer it just strikes me as dull and gray. The people just seem to have given up being free.

Sasha Siemel often carried a .38 revolver as well as the spear.

Don’t know if he used it on many cats.

Paint that whole spear black and you have an assault spear, capable of 150 stabs per second.

Looks good but it needs to be permanently attached to the shovel handle.

I want something that looks innocent but can be snapped together in an instant.
