I think I see the problem here.
Rick and Sandy do not want their story to become a reason to fear and hate mountain lions. They say this was just one bad lion.
What was bad about it? It did what mountain lions do. Do they think other lions eat carrots and kale?
Little attention has been given to the fact that Canada's restrictive firearms laws led to Rick resorting to a spear. Who knows what might have happened if Sandy had a pistol in a holster instead of bear spray hooked in her belt?
Yeah, Canada's gun laws suck but she couldn't find the pepper spray on her belt and probably couldn't have found a pistol there either the way the lion stalked and surprised her. Which is exactly how lions that aren't vegans hunt.
They had a chance to scare this lion far away from them months before. A gun would have been very useful for that then. Since Canaduh doesn't allow that a very large firecracker might have sufficed. Or are those illegal too? Could be. Point is, wild animals give wide berth to humans they think are hunting them and they don't know the difference between the report of a gun and an explosive.
