Live coverage: FBI agent faces grilling on Capitol Hill - Peter Strzok

Hearing begins at 10AM EST:

Live Coverage: Peter Strzok Questioned by Members of Congress

House lawmakers are poised to question Peter Strzok on Thursday in what is sure to be a lengthy, tense standoff between Republicans and the FBI agent who once worked on special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference.

Strzok has been in Republicans' sights for several months after a Justice Department inspector general investigation revealed that he exchanged text messages before the 2016 election that were critical of Donald Trump with Lisa Page, a former FBI lawyer with whom he was having an affair at the time.

Mueller promptly removed Strzok from the Russia investigation when the messages were revealed, but Republicans have zeroed in on him as key to uncovering what they allege was systemic FBI bias against Trump during the election. Democrats, meanwhile, have cast the effort as a politically-driven charade.

Lawmakers questioned Strzok behind closed doors late last month — now, those on the House Oversight and Judiciary Committees will have the opportunity to question him publicly.

Strzok is under subpoena to testify before the committees in the public hearing.

Strzok plans to call scrutiny ‘another notch in Putin’s belt’

8:30 a.m.

Strzok reportedly plans to tell lawmakers that the focus on his anti-Trump text messages is aiding Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Associated Press, which reviewed prepared remarks Strzok is expected to deliver, reported that the FBI agent will defend himself against the intense scrutiny from GOP lawmakers by saying his work has been free of political bias.

“Let me be clear, unequivocally and under oath: not once in my 26 years of defending my nation did my personal opinions impact any official action I took,” Strzok will say, according to the AP.

He is expected to tell lawmakers that Congress’s focus on his actions and text messages “is just another victory notch in Putin’s belt and another milestone in our enemies’ campaign to tear America apart.”

The wheels of Justice grind slowly, but, in the end, he WILL get his.

What he'll get is media star status and a longtime gig on CNN.

He looks swarmy & arrogant enough not to take the 5th - hopefully traps have been set and can then be sprung.

-- Can someone inform us if he takes the Fifth? --

I'm about to embark on packing and traveling, so will miss the show. I figure it will be a disappointment all around, neither side getting anything more than additional talking point material.

The SOB is sitting there laughing and thumbing his nose at Congress. What a joke our government is, to allow these traitors to remain in their jobs after attempting a coup d’etats. Meanwhile, the average American is getting up everyday, going to work, paying taxes, obeying the laws. What a total joke America is. We vote for a candidate who promises what we want, they then go to Washington and vote the way the lobbyists tell them to vote. All the politicians become millionaires after a few years. There is a total disconnect between the PEOPLE and the politicians. Remember, no one has been arrested for anything in this coup. Think about this America.

This isn’t about buis. It is about a plot that involved high government and elected officials to unseat a duly elected president. A plot that took place over a period of years, since it’s ongoing, and involved a number of foreign countries.

This is about far more that bloody bias.

It’s about sedition.

I really want to know what part of his job duties mandate him to send and receive politically divisive personal text. Would also be nice to know if he claimed any overtime during this period of time as I believe his timesheets to be fraudulent if it did not work his core hours.

I turned it off. I can’t watch the republican’s be publicly humiliated by this jerk.

Either they grow some or we are going to lose it all.

They just gave him an open platform to blatantly lie,

hopefully traps have been set and can then be sprung.

That'd be a first, but it won't happen. Nothing, other than a few talking points, elevation of Strzok to media star status and a new giga at CNN or MSNBC will come of this.

Why not? He knows the only one to benefit from this little dance will be himself.

My guess, nothing to see here. They’ll probe, he’ll duck and weave and no one will lay a glove on him! Even if they do, nothing, absolutely, nothing will come of it! Laws for yee but not for me!

Yep, they can't even fire this b*stard, unbelievable.
