A sporting goods store employee, who last month helped catch a suspect allegedly trying to swipe a weapon, was suspended and later lost his job at the Florida business following the incident, his lawyer said.
Dean Crouch, 32, was working at the Academy Sports store in Tallahassee on June 29 when robbery suspect Jason White allegedly tried to steal a gun, the Tallahassee Democrat reported.
After White reportedly tried to flee with the stolen firearm hed requested to see, Crouch stepped in and ultimately detained him.
Crouch, an assistant manager at the store, was nearby when the incident occurred and heard employees yelling "stop that guy," his attorney, Ryan Hobbs, told Fox News. While police made their way to the scene, the suspect was relocated to an office at the business, he said.
Hobbs said the suspect had attempted to make off with a .40 caliber handgun and matching ammunition.
The Tallahassee Police Department, who arrested the suspect, wrote on Facebook that employees detained a man who tried to run out of the store with a firearm, ammunition, and a backpack, which were stolen from the business.

“He should sue them.”
Chances are he signed an employment agreement when he was hired that dictates arbitration. If the arbitrator says the store has to rehire him, then they will make his job so difficult he’ll quit. Chances are good that he violated a clearly written policy and will lose arbitration.
The last two aerospace companies I worked for had a set of policy manuals that filled several large three ring binders. Everything you could think of and often things that were routinely done were against one policy or another. They could literally fire you for almost anything.
customer - one that purchases a commodity or service
There is no evidence than Mr. Jason F. White purchased the merchandise in question. Therefore, Mr. White was not a customer at the time of the incident.
Mr. Dean Crouch was falsely accused by Academy Sports of placing his hands on the "customer" Mr. White, who was not a customer at the time.
Mr. Crouch needs a good attorney to sue Academy Sports.
Stealing a gun is a good way to get shot.
Someone should set up a Gofundme or something so he doesn’t lose his house.
Yeah, good point. But at least you know where to get your son’s first gun!
We’re working on it. Also several local employers have offered him jobs. Our local Conservative talk station is working this story as well. Dean is a stand up guy.
These caveats are contained in insurance policies. No running after or apprehending thieves.
I second the post about patronizing local gun shops. Even the Socialist Republic of New York has enough to go around.
Nobody has time to read all that crap. People get fired for no good reason. Good news is that there are plenty of good jobs available.
I’m surprised given Academy’s firearms protocols that he was able to get the gun away from the counter.
Must have been very busy.
This criminal could have used the weapon stolen to commit violent crimes in the community. WTF is wrong with Academy?
“Nobody has time to read all that crap. “
Actually, while I was in charge of General Dynamic’s reengineering project, I read the entire set of policy manuals. I could barely hold my eyes open with toothpicks. If I recall, it took more than a week. My takeaway was that some of them conflicted so you could, for example, be fired for doing “X” or not doing “X.” When I pointed this and other issues out, my boss just grinned at me.
Duh! What do you think he has a lawyer for?
My questions too. The article really does not give the reason the guy was canned. Everyone is just assuming there is a relationship between the robbery and the firing. Just because the guy stopped the robber does not make him a good employee in other areas of the job.
There needs to be laws against that type of firing. Laws like that aren’t socialistic.
Same effing irresponsible stores who then have antiAR or antiCarry policy blaming guns on liability but not their own inactions
exactly. Perhaps Academy doesn’t want to sully their relationship with thieves.
doc,
Patronize the local FFL dealer in your area. While you may not get the lowest bulk store price, you get much more- a friendly like-minded encounter with real people, not a corporate monster. If they do not have what you want, the y can order about anything or be your transfer station for online sales from auction or sales sites. When you work it out, you come very close to price point of the box stores but you create local economy and cultivate friendship. Plus, if you ever wan to enhance or need a repair or just a conversation, its right there.
“Fired for putting hands on a customer.”
Back when America mas still America the guy would have been chiided and teased for not beating the living ,democrat out of the thief.
