Illegal immigration foes move to bypass liberal legislatures, take anti-sanctuary measures to voters
The Washington Times ^ | July 11, 2018 | Valerie Richardson

There’s virtually no chance that the uber-progressive Oregon legislature would ever repeal the state’s oldest-in-the-nation sanctuary law, which is why locals worried about illegal immigration have turned to the voters.

The Stop Oregon Sanctuaries campaign submitted roughly 110,000 signatures last week to qualify an anti-sanctuary measure for the November ballot, more than the 88,000 required, stunning liberal activists and laying the groundwork for a landmark ballot battle.

“This has national ramifications and our opponents know that,” said Cynthia Kendoll, president of Oregonians for Immigration Reform, which led the petition drive. “The thing that people don’t realize is that very seldom do citizens get to vote on immigration issues. They’re always legislated upon us. And that’s particularly the case in Oregon. We never get a say.”

Oregon may be ahead of the game, but efforts to bypass lawmakers and bring sanctuary repeals before the voters are gaining interest as the number of jurisdictions adopting measures aimed at thwarting federal immigration law explodes.

As of May, 564 states and localities had adopted sanctuary policies, growing by 650 percent during the Obama administration and nearly doubling during President Trump’s first year, according to the Federation for American Immigration Reform.

The flurry of sanctuary activity has prompted a backlash: In California, more than a dozen localities have passed ordinances or resolutions against the state law, but so far no state sanctuary measure has been repealed.

“I think there’s going to be more of a movement as people realize that enforcement of our laws is good because it protects the community,” said Shari Rendall, FAIR director of state and local director. “I think people are very tired of our laws not being enforced.”

That’s going to leave a mark, even if the courts strike them down.

Especially if the courts strike them down.

American citizens have been clamoring for enforcement for decades, but BOTH parties have been determined to keep the borders open and the laws unenforced.

Yep, and there’s a fairly strong majority in the country against illegal immigration.

It will pass and the courts will overturn it.

“would ever repeal the state’s oldest-in-the-nation sanctuary law”

If there was ever an unconstitutional law, this one is it.

How can a state stick its tongue out at the FedGov and say we refuse to cooperate?

The Leftist SCOTUS has told us over and over that federal supremacy is well...supreme.

And in any event, sanctuary laws violate the 14th amendment since they discriminate against citizens in favor of illegal aliens: citizens are liable to prosecution for all violations of law (ask Gen. Flynn) no matter how trivial, while blanket exceptions are provided by the States to non-citizens for a laundry list of violations?

What about “Equal Protection of the Laws”?

Guess we ain’t so “similarly situated”.

I’ve been told ... Eastern Oregoners possess very a different value set than do Western Oregoners.

I would be interested in knowing what geography produced the 110k signatures.

Some stinkin commie judge will strike down any law passed by the people who as the majority never wanted this unbridaled illegal invasion. There is only one way that the illegal problem will ever be solved is when the real American people THEMSELVES rise up and defend the border.

If it gets to the ballot, the legislature will make sure the text on the ballot sounds ominous and mean. Plus it will say the opposite of what the bill proposes.

Oregon people don’t want anybody coming to Oregon, legal or illegal. I think most would crowd fund a sign at the border that says “Keep Out!”

I’ve been told the Eastern portions of OR, WA and CA are the more Conservative voters.

Unfortunately, the major population centers of all three States are in the Western halves.

About 4 decades! With people saying we don’t want criminals, killers and druggies in our country! And all those in power forcing them on us. Now even Trump has been thwarted. He has the right principles, but this stupid kiddie issue is a snag. When it comes to illegals, what part of NO don’t they understand?

What kind of justification would the leftist black-robed jackboots have to strike down the will of the people, and at what point would Justice Kavenaugh have the deciding vote?

There are only 22,000 extra signatures, and after watching many of these Anti-Establishment initiatives, that may not be enough to get by the gate-keeping swamp dwellers and make it to the ballot.

The Ninth Circus would do it first. It would take years to work it’s way to Ksvanaugh. By design.
