President Trump on Tuesday pardoned a pair of Oregon ranchers whose arson conviction became a focus for opponents of federal government land ownership.
Dwight Hammond, 76, and his son Steven, 49, were convicted in 2012 and sent to prison on arson charges. They had set a series of fires on their ranch that spread to federal land.
The Hammonds case became the inspiration for the 40-day armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in 2016. The organizers wanted to protest federal land ownership.
The Hammonds distanced themselves from the occupiers and didn't endorse the action.
In a statement Tuesday announcing the pardon, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders emphasized uncertainties in the case and the prison terms and fines the Hammonds had already completed.
The evidence at trial regarding the Hammonds responsibility for the fire was conflicting, and the jury acquitted them on most of the charges, the White House said.
The Hammonds are devoted family men, respected contributors to their local community, and have widespread support from their neighbors, local law enforcement, and farmers and ranchers across the West. Justice is overdue for Dwight and Steven Hammond, both of whom are entirely deserving of these Grants of Executive Clemency.
Hardly. One third of the "country" supported the British, one third wanted no part of either side and one third supported the rebellion.
He's certainly in the Top 5 already. Tough to ever bounce above Washington, because we wouldn't exist at all without him refusing power repeatedly, as well as the military victories. Jefferson and Lincoln, too. But Mount Rushmore for Trump would not be out of the question, even after just 18 months. He was in the second tier with Reagan and Coolidge but I think he's just about passed them now. A second term locks it down, even if he does nothing else for 6.5 years. If he wins in 2020, I'll likely rank them as: Washington, Jefferson, Trump, Lincoln, Reagan, Coolidge, Adams.
(Reagan would be a notch higher if he wasn't battling a Dem Congress for 6 years).
Pardon...
Greg Walden applauds pardon of Dwight and Steven Hammond
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Representative Greg Walden (R-Hood River) today released the following statement applauding the pardon of Dwight and Steven Hammond:
Well said.
Donald Trump is a great president and George Washington would approve. Ronald Reagan is certainly smiling.
Teddy Roosevelt was chopped liver?
Well done sir. Now on to the Bundy case..
Cue Slim Whitman and the Indian Love Call.
PRESIDENT Washington led the fledgling Army of the USA against the Whiskey Rebellion rebels inside the US during his term in office.
So, yeah, country had its “cranksters” even back then. Washington was uniquely qualified by his temperament and intellect to set the precedents which guided his successors.
But when he was called to do so, he also became our only President to personally lead the Army in a military operation in 1795.
As in arguments about the best baseball players or NFL running backs, the only open question is: “Who was the SECOND best one?”

Trump: Mr. Washington, you're looking wonderful today. Love the teeth!
Washington: Mr. Trump, you're looking every bit the same. Love the hair!
That is pretty far from the case. Royalist sympathizers abounded in the colonies.
Great! Thank you president Trump!
They barely had them to begin with.
Good!! Just sad a life was lost in the stand off.
I said or implied no such thing. He was a Progressive for his day, though.
Good one!
Good for Trump and special thanks to those who brought the plight of the Hammonds to the attention of the world, the Oregon Standoff protesters.
All gave some going to jail before trial with the leaders found not guilty at trial, the lesser defendants in plea bargains or a rigged second trial with evidence and witnesses banned.
One was shot apparently by FBI agent W. Joseph Astarita and injured, Ryan Bundy.
And of course one gave the ultimate sacrifice, LaVoy Finicum.
My initial article is posted on the blog and a previous one anticipating today’s pardon.

YES!
The prosecutor who originally sent the Hammonds away and filed the appeal to give them the terrorist sentences, Amanda Marshall, left her post after sexual harassment allegations against her came up.
The replacement chosen by Loretta Lynch was Billy Williams, who was reappointed in the name of President Trump (Sessions involved?) last year.
Williams fully defended the mandatory sentences claiming firefighters were endangered by the Hammonds.
