WINDSOR, Ontario The Canadian government is forging ahead with construction of a new Detroit River bridge designed to enhance trade as economic relations between the longtime trading partners grow strained and the crossing could become a bargaining chip.
Major construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge is expected to begin this fall once a contract is signed with Bridging North America, the consortium of infrastructure companies chosen last week by the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority to build the bridge.
The long-awaited move toward an official groundbreaking later this month comes as President Donald Trump threatens a tariff on Canadian-assembled vehicles which he describes as "the big one" following Canada's retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods responding to the 25 percent duty Trump imposed on foreign steel and aluminum.
Adding to the international tensions is the billionaire Moroun family, owners of the Ambassador Bridge and longtime foes of the Canadian government who are egging on a nationalistic president to pull the plug on a permit for the bridge, which Canada sees as a top national priority for the future of its auto industry.
The Morouns' Detroit International Bridge Co. has been airing Fox News television ads in just the Washington, D.C., market, seemingly aimed at an audience of one the celebrity-billionaire-turned-president. The commercials ask him to withdraw the U.S. permit needed to build the Gordie Howe bridge.
They're also lobbying for Trump to get Canada to drop its stipulation that the Morouns tear down the Ambassador Bridge if they build a replacement span. That matter could be injected into renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Sorry for those who disagree but I love this. Very unhappy with Canada right now.
Americans might have to skimp on maple syrup for a while.
What are the Canadians going to do , most love the USA I can tell you, but we have a few loud mouth smug Canadian Nationalists who bought that smugness line years ago from the first Trudeau, an avowed socialist and former communist.
So what are these smug Canadian Nationalists going to do, arm themselves and invade the South? I hope the smug bastards will do just that and then we will be rid of them for good.
Canada has been given free access to the US market for years while keeping US goods out through tariffs and then PDJT evens the playing field and Canada’s liberal smug nationalists wig out? I say as a Canadian that it looks good on them. I hope they continue to wig out. Then Canada will elect adults to mind the store, now populated by sophomoric children like Justine Trudeau.
The majority of Canadians understand PDJT’s position, and agree with it, despite Canada’s National public radio
and TV system , funded by Canada’s federal government, honking out anti Trump propaganda 24/7.
Canada’s Family Compact, kept alive as a protected social class a few more decades by Canada’s Tariffs on US goods, meets Donald Trump.
I know who will win.
Michigan makes far better maple syrup. For years I have read that we could produce tons more here. This is our opportunity. If you need links for buying excellent Made in Michigan maple syrup let me know.
We are fifth in MS production commercially..my neighbor taps his own and we are considering it too. We use only 1% of our vast sugar maple forests currently. Just imagine how easily we could do without Canadian MS. Buy Michigan if you like.
I think it’s great they want to build a bridge and name it after Gordie Howe. What would be cool is if they formed some sort of giant ice hockey net at both ends of the bridge so the driver could simulate scoring a goal as they drive across. - maybe set up crash barriers which look like hockey boards, eh? Some wood and plexiglass.
Seriously, when has a bridge NOT been a good thing for both sides of a community? That’s why armies blow them up. Halting a bridge over a trade war is simply dumb, in my opinion.
Maybe the U.S. can have toll lanes to enter and there will be one lane that is free only to Muslims. There’s no toll but you have to have your ID checked by the State Department to pass through. That’s a win-win.
Not so sure about that. We extract a lot of raw syrup right here in SW Pennsylvania. Much of it is shipped to Vermont where it is refined and sold as “Vermont Maple Syrup” which, for some odd reason, fetches a higher retail price than “New Hampshire Maple Syrup” or the perfectly fine equivalents in ME, NY or PA.
or Michigan.
Trudeau strikes me as being a lightweight..a true snowflake. But while I believe that adjustments should be made in our trading relationship with Canada and Europe there can be no doubt that China and OPEC are our biggest enemies.
Canada should create a Free Republic if they desire prosperity instead of the Coastal Big City Government they have now.
Socialism is a poverty failure. Do not blame the USA for Canada’s failed Govt.
Significant neighborhoods are being destroyed for the Michigan end of this bridge.
We don't need no stinkin' Canadian maple syrup.
Canada has been hateful to Michiganders and I have come to strongly dislike them.
It's personal but there you go.
No bridge. Let the little snots who think they are sooo superior to us, and believe me, they have told me this many times on twitter in the last month, fend for themselves.
We share our longest border with Ontario.
Frankly we rarely even remember it’s there.
That’s how little we need their stuff.
The Canadian government is in the left pendulum swing right now. What with Jason Jagger Trudeau at the helm. This will change back.

My hometown is Windsor Ont. and I could not agree with you more!
Beg to differ with you but I must say I think you friends make the best maple syrup in NYS.
Canada has been hateful to Michiganders
Your so full of shit I can smell you in NY!
Significant neighborhoods are being destroyed for the Michigan end of this bridge.
How about an honest assessment of the type of neiborhoods that are going to be displaced.
