A former Thai navy diver who joined in search efforts to rescue 12 boys and their coach trapped in a flooded cave in Thailand has died.
Saman Kunan, 38, lost consciousness on his way out of the Tham Luang cave complex after delivering supplies to the missing group, officials said.
He could not be revived by his colleagues.
The diver had previously left the navy but had returned to help rescue operations.
"A former SEAL who volunteered to help died last night around 2am," Chiang Rai Deputy Governor Passakorn Boonyaluck told reporters at the rescue site.
"His job was to deliver oxygen. He did not have enough on his way back."

Well - I imagine that puts a damper on the whole “give the kids a mask and let them swim out” crowd. I can’t imagine them making an error like that. Really sad to hear.

If the Thais need help, they should ask Trump to send the US Army Corp of Engineers. Once they get involved, they would solve the problem.

Not trying to lay it on thick in this instance, because I don’t know all the particulars, but it always bothers me when people go out for recreation, and someone else dies trying to rescue them.
That’s the chance rescuers take. They know the risks.

Sad news. May this hero rest in peace, and may the Lord bless and comfort his family.

"Our behavior is different. How often have you seen a headline like this?--TWO DIE ATTEMPTING RESCUE OF DROWNING CHILD. If a man gets lost in the mountains, hundreds will search and often two or three searchers are killed. But the next time somebody gets lost just as many volunteers turn out.
Poor arithmetic, but very human. It runs through all our folklore, all human religions, all our literature--a racial conviction that when one human needs rescue, others should not count the price."

Unless they catch a break with the weather (unlikely), I’m afraid those kids are stuck there for the next few months.
