For decades, the Republican Party and Democrats have been largely aligned on promoting job-killing multinational free trade deals like NAFTA and KORUS, both of which aided in opening up overseas markets for multinational companies to outsource their American manufacturing jobs to countries like Mexico, leaving millions of Americans laid off in the process.
If Trump had not immediately stopped the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade agreement when he took office, economists estimated that not only would the elimination of millions of American jobs have occurred, but U.S. wages would have been further depleted.
American workers have repeatedly praised Trumps tariffs and thanked him personally for ending the promotion of multinational free trade by the U.S.
Republican lawmakers are sticking to their globalist free trade agenda and opposing President Trumps America First tariffs despite the popularity the tariffs have with GOP voters and conservatives. Trump, most recently, has put protective tariffs on imported goods and materials such as steel, aluminum, washing machines, Canadian lumber, electronics from China, and solar panels in an effort to boost American industries and protect American workers jobs.
In the latest Harvard/Harris Poll, 83 percent of Republican voters say they support tariffs on imported products like automobiles and electronics. Additionally, 81 percent of conservatives said they too supported tariffs, along with 61 percent of Americans living in rural communities.

Yes, and the reason I really liked Duncan Hunter, but he failed to sell it. Trump is selling it and the GOP just doesn’t get it.
I agree and I am not convinced they understand trade policy enough to know where to stand. But hopefully finally Americans are waking up to the totally unfair advantages China has.
That is how my opinion on free trade has changed. Once very religious about it, I now understand some things trump economics.
Who on Fox said that BS?
Central VA has a real hate on for anyone who believes in free trade. But I agree with you. Protectionism can be abused especially in the case where they insulate a company or industry from competition making them lazy and inefficient.
In Canada we have milk and egg board protectionism. Sure it protects our producers but screws the consumer. Why should I as a consumer finance the fortunes of our milk and egg producers? Arguing purely for protectionism as a virtue, means you have to accept that it is a good or moral duty for consumers to pay more because a producer can’t be bothered to compete.
“Free trade is aimed at the optimal allocation of economic resources”
What do you think the purpose of government is? Is it achieve “optimal allocation of resources” or should it be “job opportunities” for Americans?
The optimal allocation could very well be shutting down all factories in the USA, relocating “the means of production” to low wage countries and shipping finished products back to the USA. That will maximum profits right? But is that what government should do?
Maybe in a republican form of government, the people can say, we don’t want our jobs sent overseas, we don’t want the “optimal allocation of resources”. We want localism instead of globalism.
“No, tariffs do not increase employment in the long run”
Will you admit that China has imposed tariffs on car imports, thus car companies produce cars in China for the Chinese consumers using Chinese labor?
Most, not all, but most cars sold in China are made there. Chinese tariffs on cars has dramatically increased employment in the Chinese auto sector.
Tell me, does your brain cell even realize that it's all alone?
Price gouging AFTER getting rid of US labor, plain and simple.
You are a liar.
A few executives who stabbed millions of US employees in the back -- get richer.
Everyone else in the US gets poorer.
What happens in reality is a few rich folks engage in wage arbitrage, sharing some of the proceeds with politicians foreign and domestic, to grease the skids and look the other way.
And quality takes a hit too, as the chemically contaminated Chinese sheetrock and melamine-laced dog food bear witness.
Let me guess, you help import foreign workers to undecut even further, US citizen workers.
Let me guess, they'll start eating long pork instead.
Don't recall but someone did, could have been a guest, in fact it probably was. I do not watch any of the MSM so had to be FOX where I heard it.
#38 - Hey thanks for the link - I will give it a listen in the AM. It’s my catch-up time. Cheers!
I wasn’t saying EVERYONE doesn’t have an understanding of the issues. Trump has big crowds and does have a large backing. But with his disapproval ratings hovering in the mid 50 percentile, a shows alot of low info folks have no grasp of the issues. Yes, a vast majority of the 55% that disapprove of his job performance are probably leftist, socialists, commies, ANTIFA open borders types who would never back Trump because he’s a Republican. But a good number are just low info folks who have no understanding of the issues and go against Trump simply because thats what the media and pop culture icons tells them to do
Uh-huh, sure. Ever notice how few of the lefties remember to go out and vote? With President Trump cracking down on illegals — and hints of other activity to cut down on voter fraud — and the #Walkaway movement and President Trump at all-time high approval in the black community — not to mention the President OWNS the Rust Belt, as people KNOW they have jobs and hope after 8 years of 0moeba — we’re looking at a Red Tsunami.
Great points, well said.
And has the guts to stand up to China, the Euroweenies and the Wall Street Journal.
F.U. no tax creates wealth overall. Tariffs are taxes.
Why are you anti-capitalist and fear the market?
We have never had Free Trade in our history. Government managed trade is NOT Free Trade. It still is theoretically valid.
Trump has stated his goal with the tariff is to GET RID OF THEM. Why would he say that?
Optimal allocation of resources produces the optimal employment. And “no” the role of government is not to create jobs. That Leftist claim should be changed to state the role of government is to get the hell out of the way allowing the economy to grow creating new jobs.
