For decades, the Republican Party and Democrats have been largely aligned on promoting job-killing multinational free trade deals like NAFTA and KORUS, both of which aided in opening up overseas markets for multinational companies to outsource their American manufacturing jobs to countries like Mexico, leaving millions of Americans laid off in the process.
If Trump had not immediately stopped the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade agreement when he took office, economists estimated that not only would the elimination of millions of American jobs have occurred, but U.S. wages would have been further depleted.
American workers have repeatedly praised Trumps tariffs and thanked him personally for ending the promotion of multinational free trade by the U.S.
Republican lawmakers are sticking to their globalist free trade agenda and opposing President Trumps America First tariffs despite the popularity the tariffs have with GOP voters and conservatives. Trump, most recently, has put protective tariffs on imported goods and materials such as steel, aluminum, washing machines, Canadian lumber, electronics from China, and solar panels in an effort to boost American industries and protect American workers jobs.
In the latest Harvard/Harris Poll, 83 percent of Republican voters say they support tariffs on imported products like automobiles and electronics. Additionally, 81 percent of conservatives said they too supported tariffs, along with 61 percent of Americans living in rural communities.

Yet Trumps approval ratings remain very low. While I am glad he doesn’t govern by what the polls show, the polling shows a problem for Trump because the majoriry of the American people don’t have an understanding of the issues and still rely on what the media tells them. I am willing to bet a majority believe the good economy we are in now is a result of 0bamas policies because they heard it on CNN.
All I can say is that the conventional mind set dies hard. The old use for tariffs was singularly “protective.” No discussions between the parties, just slap a tariff on an imported product and the impacted country retaliates by doing likewise - that’s the end of it. Nothing more and nothing less. Well, the days of globalists wanting to deplete America are over. There’s a problem now for all the world welfare leaches, President Trump is rewriting the play book on tariffs. Tariffs are no longer just protective, they are leverage in a worldwide trade, hard nosed, deal making campaign to effect ‘fair’ and ‘free’ trade - a whole new refreshing approach by a great and powerfully effective deal maker. As usual, the stuck in the mud, atrophied Republicans, Never Trumpers, liberals, and worldwide naysayers will all be eating crow when this is over.
We find that the SWAMP is deeper and deeper than ever thought.
Good post. Thanks
I particularly like the way that Trump is handling enemy China starting off with tariffs on a mere 34 billion of the 580 billion in Chinese imports sending a warning signal to American businesses to shift their production out of China back to the US or friendlier Asian countries if they can’t make the product competitively in the US. Gradually hopefully most will shift out of China and the bottom will fall out from the Chinese economy in this zero sum game. As soon as the tariff on the 34 billion goes into effect look for American businesses to start looking for their supply chain elsewhere and to stop growing their production facilities in China
I love this, thank you for the explanation.
A trade policy without tariffs is like a gun without bullets.
We need a uniform across the board tariff.
Balanced Trade is another way to do it.
For example, there are 3 options of thought on where the numbers ought to be on our trade with China.
Option 1: USA exports 600B to China, China exports 200B to USA
Option 2: USA exports 600B to China, China exports 600B to USA
Option 3: USA exports 200B to China, China exports 600B to USA
The extremists go for Option 1 or Option 3 while the moderates and balanced-thinking fair-minded people go for Option 2. The current status quo is Option 3, its why tens of thousands of factories have closed in the USA, and its why so many rural communities are very devastated & millions underemployed on opioids/welfare and us having a huge national debt.
If someone loses a job (because of tariffs) and then gets a job with another employer, was a job lost?
If someone quits a job and takes a job with a different company, was a job gained?
Trump is “reorganizing” trade at the best possible time, when jobs are plentiful. (Almost) Anyone who wants a job can find one.

A good question to start regularly asking Republicans, Democrats, and Independents.
Do you approve or disapprove of the way the Chamber of Commerce is trying to influence decisions in the branches and levels of government in the United States?
For me the answer is “disapprove” right now because I support fair/balanced trade and I support compassionate rule of law on immigration where people go through the process at US consulates to be vetted and either approved or disapproved for entry before they get to the border.
World Socialism is loved by Republican elite, hated by Americans.
Foreign Tariffs is World Socialism.
Foreign Tariffs fund the corrupt Republican elite.
Domestic Tariffs are jobs & prosperity.
Domestic Tariffs fund Americans.
NEVER talk about “tariffs”, that is the enemy’s deception.
Talk about “Domestic over Foreign” Tariffs fund Americans.
I have for many many decades had cognitive dissonance about so called free trade because it was crammed down my throat like global warming in school. When you point out the flaws, they just deny and attack the messenger. Aw, that’ll never happen. Then it does.
Well said. They are still slavishly devoted to the cheap labor express.
Since I haven't watched the MSM in 30 years I had to hear it on FOX.
Trump inherited a great economy from Obama.
Lionel said this morning that this is the number one story that we don't dare talk about. He moved his start time to 9:00 Eastern the last week or so, was running up against Rush before.
Great, now how are the self-appointed global elite supposed to set up permanent governance? Thanks Trump_vs_Evil_Witch.
