Donald Trump said on Friday he plans to announce his nominee for a forthcoming vacancy on the supreme court on 9 July – a lightning-quick move to replace the retiring swing vote Justice Anthony Kennedy, 81.

Speaking aboard Air Force One en route to his private golf club in New Jersey on Friday afternoon, the president announced that he has five finalists, including two women, out of the shortlist of 25 names that had been previously circulated.

Speaking to reporters on the plane from Washington DC, Trump said he may interview one or two contenders for the nomination this weekend in New Jersey.

“I’ve got it narrowed to about five,” he said.

Of Roe v Wade, the landmark 1973 decision that legalized abortion in the US, he said: “I’m not going to ask them that question.”

The Democrats will say, whoever it is, that they are the spawn of Satan. They play the same cards so many times, the spots are wore off...

...and serious people don't even listen anymore.

I’m with you. She’s perhaps the best originalist, the most like Scalia, and the left is going to be a little more restrained about a woman.

It's a man. It's a woman. It's straight. It's gay. It's liberal. It's conservative. It's Democrat. It's Republican...

Guess libiots can’t cry yet. On second thought, they’ll probably cry & whine since he’s right on track.

...and the left is going to be a little more restrained about a woman.

Just like they were about Sarah Palin and Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Not likely.

When the stakes are high enough, the Left has no problem tossing out the b-word or even the c-word to smear a good conservative woman.

Roseanne Barr? I hear that her professional commitments have become a bit less time consuming and she may be open to something new.

Not sure that the left is capable of exercising restraint, but attacking and demonizing an attractive, intelligent mother of 7 is unlikely to sit well with many in the general public. Barrett is going to come across as a very likable, admirable woman, and the mother-of-7 thing is just so unique these days that the left will be disoriented by it. Attacks on her will seem like attacks on motherhood itself.

They got away with demonizing Bork but in some ways he was a rather easy person for them to paint as some sort of weirdo. By all fair accounts, Bork was a brilliant jurist and and true gentleman. But I remember watching some of those hearings in '87, and Bork didn't come across as exactly from central casting. There he was with a scraggly beard and somewhat unruly hair expounding on obscure legal theories while the yokels on the Senate committee did their best to attack him. I might be misremembering, but I also have this memory of him smoking cigarettes during the hearing. It was a different era in '87, but it wasn't '47 either and he wasn't exactly image conscious.
