The ramifications of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortezs stunning primary defeat of longtime Queens Democratic boss and Congressman Joe Crowley (D-NY) extend well beyond the confines of Capitol Hill.
The 28-year-old member of Democratic Socialists of Americawho shockingly won in New Yorks 14th congressional district on a leftist platform of Medicare for All, abolishing ICE, and a federal jobs guaranteeinspired a major boost in membership for the organization on Wednesday.
According to Lawrence Dreyfuss, a program associate for DSA, the organization saw a surge of 1,152 new memberships on Wednesdayabout 35 times more sign-ups than on an average day.
The last major membership bump DSA experienced was in the month following President Trumps election, during which time they had about six times more sign-ups than in the previous month.
DSA has undergone a renaissance of sorts in the Trump era, ballooning in size from some 5,000 members in November 2016 to 40,000 nationwide.
The left-wing groups growth has been attributed in part to broader resistance to the new administration and wider acceptability of the democratic socialist label championed by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
The people of NY-14 demanded more from its representative than empty promises and deep pockets, Christian Bowe of DSAs National Political Committee said after Ocasios win. Were proud of this victory, and we know this is only one of many more to come.

This is so good!
Maybe they can buy Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez off with a $600K lake house too.
All of this is great news.
Great, and just remember that she is now the Policy Architect for the Democrat Party!
I suggest the DNC move further to the Left so that they can recapture these fleeing socialist voters.
This is a huge problem for the Democrat Party. If their minorities and whack job leftists all bolt and join a new party, the Democratic Socialists, they’ll be fighting each other and splitting votes in national elections all over the country.
I wonder how many of them are on the Soros payroll.
This is not good news - this can grow to be a very real threat to our Democracy.
National Socialist Workers Party??Democrat Socialist Workers Party?? hmmm....
I suspect if this catches on at all, it’ll be in the major cities (especially on the left and right coasts) and not in the heartland. Lots of disillusioned and angry people living in the places that the Democrats have ruined by 40 years of being in power would be ripe for the pickings by anyone that promises them political power and material freebies.
Increased membership to 40,000? Well la-dee freaking dah! Barely 2/3 of 1% of the NRA membership.
I wouldn’t think 1100 new members to be exactly a tidal wave. As long as we have Venezuela to point to, socialism has to stick to people too stupid to know what’s happened there.
Let’s be frank: her victory was driven by hostile and resentful nonwhites who want their cut of the white people’s pie.
It’s racial marxism.
If they could put white people in camps, they would.
“I hate Illinois Nazis”
I think in twenty years, PhD researchers will be sitting there and trying to explain to the public how the ‘Bernie-effect’ came to be, and reshuffled the Democratic Party into a split mess. They should have never allowed Bernie to participate in the primary of 2016. Now that they’ve had a taste of ‘free-stuff’, they’d really like to get the full dose.
I’ll even go and predict that over the next decade, this fringe group will center its sights on young Democrats in colleges, and urbanized areas. There will have to be a split party within ten to fifteen years.
The cool thing about this is; Senior, seasoned Democrats know the cannot win a general election on such a platform.
And they also know this is the future for the primaries.
Serves ‘em right.
They believe the Party is
By the People
For the People
Sounds good until they grow up and realize they’re the ones paying for all the promises. You never have enough martyrs.
Just flip the name around and you get Socialist Democrats....the old SPD from the 20s.
Makes things easier.
