Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) on Wednesday lamented the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy as “a disaster” for “We the People.”
The 81-year-old Kennedy, an appointee of former President Ronald Reagan's, who has long been considered a “swing vote” on the court, announced his retirement on Wednesday.
“This is a disaster for everyone who believes in the 'We the People' vision of the Constitution,” Merkley tweeted.
In a follow-up tweet, Merkley noted that he was “worried” about the standing of Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion.
Kennedy’s retirement opens the door for President Trump to nominate a second conservative justice to the Supreme Court. Anti-abortion advocates are expected to pursue more cases if the court leans right.
Emboldened by the Trump administration, anti-abortion advocates have been gearing up to potentially move to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Trump said he will immediately begin his search for Kennedy's replacement.

Agreed. It is why this has been so important. The Supreme Court for the last 30-50 years seems to have been going all the Leftist way, and we are seeing the results of it.
This is important...until we have a Supreme Court that can reliably interpret the Constitution as written rather than creating “penumbras’ out of thin air, this country will be under threat.

We may not see another President like him in our lifetime.
But maybe there are some future politicians who sit up take notice, and see how well this attitude of not sticking the finger in the air every time you inhale actually works.

If the anti’s really believe the end of the world is looming, what is to stop a solid wall of D senators, along with a few never-Trumpers from holding up any replacement for 6 years? Keep the court evenly divided, 4 to 4y. A recipe for gridlock, which would suit the D’s just fine, at this point.

I love this. I love this whole situation. The lefties’ heads are exploding.
By “we the people” this Dem obviously means the people who want the Constitution to mean nothing (i.e. a changing, “living” Constitution) and the Court to unconstitutionally create new laws (instead of the legislature) have lost out. Those of us who want unchanging Constitutional rights are thrilled.
