Robert Wilkie, President Trumps choice to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs, is a conservative Washington insider who would bring three decades of military policymaking and a deep list of Capitol Hill connections to a Cabinet post responsible for serving one of the administrations most crucial constituencies.
But when he appears Wednesday for his Senate confirmation hearing, Wilkie also will draw on a career spent working shoulder to shoulder with polarizing figures in U.S. politics and often defending their most divisive views.
Wilkie, 55, has impeccable credentials: three decades at the center of the countrys most important military policies. The son of an Army artillery commander severely wounded in Vietnam and a reserve officer in the Air Force himself. A trusted lieutenant of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis with contacts in Congress spanning at least five administrations.

Wilkie grew up visiting U.S. battlefields with his father and developed a lifelong fascination with military history, including that of his ancestors, who fought for the Confederacy. He was, as recently as 2005, a fixture at the annual memorial ceremonies in Washington held by descendants of Confederate veterans around the birthday of Jefferson Davis. Wilkie also was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, a group that defends public displays of the Confederate symbols.
Sounds like the WaPo wants him sent to the Gulag immediately for being related to a Confederate.
Oh, he knows Obama and Hillary?
It really is quite amazing what a smear job the media is doing with anyone or anything related to Trump. I think they’ve forgotten there’s a great “Silent Majority” out there losing patience with their bias and conceit.

Marist/NPR poll: 62% of Americans support Confederate statues
IBD/TIPP poll: 62% of Americans support Confederate statues
I know it may be a shock to the pearl clutchers at The Washington Post, but this position is very in tune with Americans, only about a quarter of the population wants to tear them down.

How are you going to fix a BROKEN SYSTEM?
The New Roll out of the Military Bases Pharmacy Registration was a Fiasco last Friday. Small Navy Base designed for 50 Active Duty was overwhelmed with 100+ Seniors, handicapped, those on OXY tanks pushing them in shopping carts, a normal 20 min at most pick up turned into a 2 hr nightmare. New Scripts were not available until Mon. Tue it went better as they had a core man showing people how to operate the new Electronic system. You had to be there when you # was called. Sure they promised to txt you that didn’t work out so well.
Imagine if this were a base the size of Pensacola? Instead of BUPERS inland base? It would have been 400+. No warning was issued about the roll out of this new system, which will double your time spent placing or picking up scripts.
Trump's repeated bad picks and turnover because of them seriously undermine the great manager and employer image he came to the presidency with. From Sessions on down, he's picked quite a number of embarrassments. And this was the one area I thought we'd see him excel in the most.
If you read Civil War threads on FR, you’d wouldn’t be surprised that there are some freepers who would agree with that.
You sound exactly like a democrat that giggled this morning over coffee when you read this smear job on a man who is imminently qualified to be VA Secretary.. Or did you write the article,
And for the VA, what is the problem getting a competent administrator to take it over and fix it? Is it the VA itself? Maybe we need to break up the VA? How might we do that?
And, yes, I do wonder at some of the embarrassing picks Trump makes as these tarnish his reputation for being a good picker of people.
Finally, don't throw around insults when you are at a loss to explain people on FR. I don't giggle, don't drink coffee, and am not a Democrat.
Aw, the president is a LOSER! According to you.
In case you haven’t realized, the media goes after anyone who dares to accept the president’s appt. And if you think this stupid reason is enough to disqualify him, you should go work for CNN.
Are we sure he’s not a Shriner ?
Well...don't offer VA benefits to veterans of the Confederate Army and I'm fine with him.
They have the same rights to their statues as supporters of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. or anyone else.
The current PC crowd does not own our history. If anything, they are a stain on it.
You don't regularly post and I could care less if you are no or old on FR, but why don't you read first and think before you jump in and make rude, baseless statements. What did you do, wake up this morning and say, Hey, I think I will go insult people on FR? Sure haven't seen you around joining our many discussions, so again, read first and stop jumping to clueless conclusions .
After a great day yesterday for the president, you start posting about all his lousy choices in a snide, condescending way. I’m not the only one pushing back on your silly post.
Also, your second paragraph makes no sense. Looks like your getting hot under the collar.
Large and in charge, aren’t ya?
I will not support anyone that flies, flew, or defends the ConfederacyNo one cares. It's not about you.
There are no defenders of slavery here or practically anywhere in public life. Everyone recognizes this historical wrong.
However, many of us are defenders of the sovereign right to dissolve political unions without being shot at as a result. The scourge of slavery doesn’t erase this fundamental right - a right you may wish you fought to preserve since the odds of you getting frog marched for not bending the knee to the SJW “civil right” du jour before your lifetime is up are not exactly low.
Screw with marmelstein, you go through me on the way to her.
