Rep. Jim Jordan Announces Bid For Speaker of the House

Rep. Jim Jordan, founding chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, has confirmed that he plans to enter the House Speaker’s race to succeed outgoing Speaker Paul Ryan.

Jordan made the announcement on The Curt Schilling Podcast on Monday. “If and when there is a Speaker’s race, I plan on being part of that discussion,” Jordan said, before adding that the GOP needs to focus on “the kind of things we told the American people we were going to do” if they want to have a Speaker’s race at all. (RELATED: Jim Jordan Considering Running for Speaker of the House).

“We get the right kind of immigration bill across the finish line, we actually make the tax cuts permanent, we fight for the values we told the American people [we would], we reform welfare. I mean, these are the kind of things we told the American people we were going to do and I think more important than who the Speaker is next year is what we do this year because if we don’t do the right things this year we might not have a race for Speaker. Maybe it would be a race for minority leader so let’s stay focused on what we got to do and everything else will take that step.”

To the chagrin of conservative voters, Paul Ryan has carried on the establishment tendencies of ousted former House Speaker John Boehner. In contrast, Speaker hopefuls like House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Majority Whip Steve Scalise have made an effort to appeal to the working-class voters who elected President Donald Trump.

There was some friction.
Mostly, though, the HFC has stymied Ryan, when Leadership gave Trump a bad bill.

This guy would be great, I saw those hearings a while back, and he was one who didn’t pull any punches, he impressed me greatly. It shows he isn’t afraid to speak up.

Jim Jordan would be my choice over McCarthy but I
can’t help but wonder if the Speaker job might ruin
him. I’m afraid McCarthy might already be Ryanized.

Why not impeachment of Ms. Waters?

You "can't" impeach a representative, although it's never been tried. There was one attempt to impeach a senator and the senate ruled that couldn't be done. But that senator had already been expelled, which could be done to Mad Maxine. If we could nullify her race card... It only takes 2/3 of their own house to expel a senator or representative, so it's actually easier than impeaching and removing her would be. Censoring her is a more realistic outcome, even if it has no real impact.

censoring makes her a hero in her district for “standing up to the man.” She got 68% of the votes in the primary

Nothing, short of ending welfare, will make any difference to her district. I suppose they could riot and burn their own district down, but at least some there must realize Trump wouldn’t, and Sacramento can’t afford to, bail them out afterward. But censoring her may make Rats in competitive districts be less public about supporting her. And it would cheer up our base to see something done against someone on the left, even if it’s a token action.

The hispanics are increasing in her district but in Cal that means Re-Conquista, a mexican take over.

So if they do try to burn down their own district and force Trump to send troops, he can put some ICE on it.

We do need to hire a bunch of additional immigration administrative judges and ancillary staff and probably need to fire and replace some of the current crop. A supreme court case this month should make both easier although real progress needs Trump's congressional red wave first.

How do we help Jim get the votes he needs? Or do you want to have another Ryan eunuch as Speaker? I don’t and neither does President Trump!!

You need to get 218 Republicans in the House to vote for him. That's 88%. Even if the GOP holds the House next January odds are that percentage will go up. Someone like Jordan can't get that many votes. Odds are it will be another Ryan type.

I don’t and neither does President Trump!!

I'm not thrilled with it either. But what you want or what I want or what President Trump wants doesn't make any difference.

Start calling in your support for Congressman Jim Jordan to be the next Speaker of the House.

Emanuel Cleaver? He's a no vote.

There’s some Congressional aide talk that Jordan has reached out to House committee chairmen and promised them greater autonomy as a way to gain support among more liberal Republicans.

People forget that Ryan gained some conservative votes for Speaker by promising not to to punish or retaliate against the Freedom Caucus for their views.

Jordan is essentially promising compromise with moderates/liberals which would certainly make him seem less attractive to conservatives, but that might be the best conservatives can get.

Weakening the power of the Speaker's office in order to gain it is pretty short sighted.

People forget that Ryan gained some conservative votes for Speaker by promising not to to punish or retaliate against the Freedom Caucus for their views.

Ryan started with like 95% of the votes he needed. Jordan is going up against McCarthy and I have to believe that McCarthy is in pretty much the same position Ryan was in.

As I recall, there was no other real candidate and Ryan had to be convinced to serve

Not entirely true. Kevin McCarthy wanted it but the Freedom Caucus made it clear that they wouldn't vote for him, and without their votes he couldn't get to 218. Ryan was a compromise and only agreed to run if the Freedom Caucus committed to him. We may be facing that again: the Freedom Caucus prevents McCarthy from getting to 218, Jordan has enough to block McCarthy but nowhere near enough to win, I could see Scalise being the compromise choice this time. Assuming the GOP still has the House, of course. Honestly I think a lot of them are cheering on the Democrats to take the House back for that reason alone.
