Hardline immigration bill fails in the House

The House on Thursday rejected a hardline immigration bill — introduced by Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) — after leadership postponed a second vote on a compromise measure written with centrists.

The 193-231 vote came a day after President Trump signed an executive order ending the controversial practice of separating children from parents who cross the border illegally.

No Democrats voted in favor of Goodlatte's bill.

House leadership had expressed pessimism on the chances for either Goodlatte’s legislation or a second compromise bill written with centrists, both of which come as the growing crisis at the border dominated headlines.

The hardline measure faced sharp pushback from both Democrats and moderates, who took issue with a number of provisions including its cuts to legal immigration.

Both bills have the support of the administration, whose "zero tolerance" policy toward undocumented immigration has come under bipartisan fire over the separation of migrant families.

The vote effectively killed a discharge petition — introduced by Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-Fla.) in April — that would have circumvented leadership and forced votes on four separate immigration proposals. The bill with the most votes over 218 would have then been sent to the upper chamber.

The discharge petition, backed by moderates Republicans and many Democrats, nearly had its required number of backers, forcing leadership's hand in bringing forth the Thursday votes.

you think Trump has no strategy?

Think Trump learned strategy a couple decades ago.

Will it work with the morons in Washington (and will the USA see through the MSM propagandist)? ...Don't know, but it's at least nice to know we finally have a guy in power that is fighting for us little guys.

This time is a businessman. Last time an actor.

I agree with you totally, as you can see from the thread many others think they should be King

After 42 yrs in the business world you learn a lot about playing politics and many strategies to uncover those with and against you and how to smoke them out, as well as outwit them.

“The poison dream of cheap labor is responsible for the current open borders quagmire.”

And a bigger voting base. (That’s the major one. Check out Palmieri’s leaked email.)

They use people as pawns.

The ruling elites (both sides) throw the middle class under the bus (again) but if you research hard core progressives countries they have always done it this way.

Did you catch that his zero tolerance has come under fire? Just yesterday it was his separating kids from parents that was under fire. Now it’s the zero tolerance.

Take the names of the rinos we must make sure they don’t win reelection.

Why do they want to distroy our country with culture distroying levels of Immigration?

Why are they trying to drive down low and medium skill wages with imported job competition?

Why are they supporting chain migration? Just because we support one member of a family doesn’t mean we need to import the whole clan.

They are representing K-Street and the Democratic Party who are looking for cheap labor and cheap votes respectively.

That is the bottom line it’s about their personal power and money plain and simple.

To call these people “moderate” belies their nature and campaign pleges to do otherwise.
These are corrupt RINOs looking to line their pocket from k-streek looking for cheap labor.
And replace their voters with cheap depended votes.

You want to know why there hasn’t been any wage growth in the lower to Mid incomes in the last 40 years it’s because these same people. For these same reasons.

Same story as always K Street rhinos and Democrats looking for cheap labor and deal goverment depended votes.

There’s nothing moderate about a politician who campaign someone position and votes the other way after assuming office.

We have to get rid of these rhinos and Democrats they are responsible for the last 40 Years of wage stagnation in the lower skill job groups that compete with these armies of 3rd world imigrants.

The Democrats need a theme for the mid-terms.

They have nothing. Hate Trump gets old.

Maybe they can revive Obamas famous bathroom initiative.

“Either of these bills might as well have been written by Obama himself.”

Uh, you think Obama would have allocated tens of millions for the wall, passed Kate’s Law, withheld funds from sanctuary cities, ended the diversity visa lottery and chain migration (thus lowering and improving legal immigration), criminalized visa overstays, and denied the “Dreamers” a pathway to citizenship? This is what Goodlatte’s bill did. And Trump should have at least been on record fighting specifically for it, rather than the squishy Ryan bill.

If anyone wants to read more about the exact details of both bills, the excellent NumbersUSA site (which is on our side) has a great chart:

The people that elected Trump need to support him on this, there is enough of us. I have been doing all I can, not sure what I can do but we have to come up with something. People that support securing the border and stopping illegal immigration are the ones coming up with the counter to the attacks. The attacks are coming fast a furious though. As soon as one thing is proven to be a lie, another is already on fire.

The Rasmussin poll today released today showed over 50% of registered voters support Trump on the border issues, even now.

All I know to do is work just as hard to support Trump now as we worked to get him elected, and then work some more.

I do know on social media I am seeing many people stand up to the lefties that I have never seen say a word in the past no matter what was going on. That has been very encouraging to me. The lefties call people vile names, and curse...the conservatives post the truth with sources...the RINOS wring their hands not knowing what to do. I have also seen many posts by people who say they were Democrats that claim to have changed their affiliation and will never vote Democrat again because of the crazy SJWs and other crazy dims. The lefties often end up blocking everyone they don’t agree with, I see that as winning.

This is the poll that encourages me:

“When families are arrested and separated after attempting to enter the United States illegally, 54% of Likely U.S. Voters say the parents are more to blame for breaking the law. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that only 35% believe the federal government is more to blame for enforcing the law. Eleven percent (11%) are not sure.”

Would you mind providing some (reliable) sources for the claim that neither bill provided funding for the wall? The usually highly reliable, anti-illegal immigration site NumbersUSA says that the Goodlatte bill authorized $10.3 billion per year for four years (so $41.2 billion total) for the “construction of physical barriers” and “improving tactical infrastructure.” It says the Ryan bill appropriates $24.3 billion total over eight years for these same things (with $16.6 billion specifically for building a physical barrier on the border).

Why in the world wouldn’t Trump use all these billions of dollars on building the wall? What other constructed physical barriers could all this money be used for if not the wall? Trump’s the one who gets to implement the spending after all.

Those Rs are on the payoff list right with the dims. As long as they keep filling their pockets they will not change, they do not care about this country or we the people. It is all about power and money.

Congress sighs with relief and goes on a long recess vacation

I think Trump has them worried enough to at least ruin their vacations...not one of them knows what he will do next...
