Full title..............'There's no replacing him': Arizona Republicans say it's 'inappropriate' to talk about the future of John McCain's seat as he battles terminal brain cancer................Senator John McCain's legacy was thrust into focus nearly one year ago when he announced his brain cancer diagnosis. The six-term Senator and decorated Vietnam War veteran is now fighting the illness from his beloved Arizona, and filling the role of one of the few Congressional Republican voices to publicly rebuke Trump administration decisions.
Yet the question of what happens if McCain steps down from office before 2022 is a lingering one, casting an uncomfortable haze around the future of a seat that can't quite ever be filled.
'John McCain is a one-of-a-kind politician, and there's no replacing him,' said Stan Barnes, an Arizona Republican consultant. 'No one serving in political office today remembers a time when John McCain was not representing us in Washington.'
Some Arizona Republicans have criticized conversations about the future of McCain's seat as inappropriate. But reflections around the 81-year-old statesman's life, legacy and status as a national political figure have resurfaced via a new HBO documentary, 'John McCain: For Whom the Bell Tolls,' and his new memoir, 'The Restless Wave.'

For McCain, the near future is death
The timing depends on the definition of near
I kind of agree with you. Maybe there should be an
unwritten policy that when you reach a certain age as
a legislator you can expect to get talked about regarding
the future of your legislative seat.
There is. The age is about 30 or so.
That right there makes him a real douchebag.
The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The five senators Alan Cranston (Democrat of California), Dennis DeConcini (Democrat of Arizona), John Glenn (Democrat of Ohio), John McCain (Republican of Arizona), and Donald W. Riegle, Jr. (Democrat of Michigan) were accused of improperly intervening in 1987 on behalf of Charles H. Keating, Jr., Chairman of the Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, which was the target of a regulatory investigation by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board (FHLBB). The FHLBB subsequently backed off taking action against Lincoln.
Oh, then there was the horrendous Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007 which derived from McCain sponsored legislation...
The Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act (S. 1033), a bill proposed in May 2005 by Senators Ted Kennedy and John McCain, sometimes referred to as the "McCain-Kennedy or McKennedy Bill." The bill was portrayed as a compromise between providing a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and increased border enforcement: it included funding for 300 miles (480 km) of vehicle barriers, 105 camera and radar towers, and 20,000 more Border Patrol agents, while simultaneously restructuring visa criteria around high-skilled workers. The bill also received heated criticism from both sides of the immigration debate. The bill was introduced in the United States Senate on May 9, 2007, but was never voted on, though a series of votes on amendments and cloture took place.
Is there ANYTHING good this man has accomplished? Why the hell is he being lionized? IIRC, I think he ran for POTUS and lost.
What a bunch of pablum -- we aren't allowed to do any planning for when he is gone UNTIL he is six feet under? Bunch of snowflakes.
pray pray pray McShame and Flake are sicko aberrations on the history of Arizona... and the citizens will find MUCH MUCH better, saner, more positive and constructive candidates to replace them, soon....
My Lord what losers (and destructive ones at that) AZ has with those two clowns
I recall he took a bunch of money from Charles Keating in the Savings and Loan scandal, that must be worth something......
If McCain had an ounce of class, he would have resigned months ago.
That's bull s**t. This comes from the era where just because a career politician is in office for decades, they're seen as some kind of icon or political standard. This is political jackassery.
If McCain’s cancer is terminal, it’s entirely appropriate to begin talking about his replacement.
He is neither one of a kind or irreplaceable, Stan and neither are hired guns like you who make a living on your knees.
If Churchill could be replaced, than so can McCain.
Lust for Money is eclipsed by only one thing, The Lust for Power
Absolutely.
So the McCain foundation checks are still clearing, you piece of crap cronies.
The case is closed. JLAGRAYFOX has spoken.
Touche.
Was referring to incumbents, AYK, of course.
Have they considered a chimpanzee?
How is “representation” working out for any of us?
Keating 5, he also he left his first wife in the hospital to marry the Budweiser queen. That is just to name a couple.
