The White House said Friday that President Trump supports House legislation that closely tracks his priorities on border security and limiting legal immigration, walking back comments he made on national television rejecting the GOP bill.
The reversal came after hours of confusion on Capitol Hill, where Trumps words roiled an already fragile internal debate between conservative and moderate House Republicans who have been trying to find an immigration compromise after months of false starts.
The president fully supports both the Goodlatte bill and the House leadership bill, White House spokesman Raj Shah said, referring to legislation drafted by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) and a separate compromise measure.
Shah said Trump, during his Fox and Friends interview, was referring to an effort led by moderate House Republicans to force a series of immigration votes over the objections of the GOP leadership. Another senior White House official said Trump misunderstood the question that was posed to him, which prompted the president to say that he certainly wouldnt sign the more moderate one.
House Republican leaders had teed up action on two immigration measures: a hard-line draft written by Goodlatte and legislation billed as a compromise between the moderate and conservative factions of the GOP conference.
The draft compromise bill released Thursday was written with White House input, including from top Trump immigration adviser Stephen Miller, and closely hews to the four pillars the administration set out in a January framework.

First-time thread post. Thanks.
All I want to know is does this bill include a respectable amount of money for The Wall or not? I get it that both parties want some form of amnesty or ‘forgiveness’. There will be no getting around that part.
The compost lies, that’s what they do. There are two different bills. Trump always supported the one and flat out rejected the other.
I could do without the DACA CACA and the Dreamers, but if it gives us the wall, we should probably take it.
Ya done good. Congrats!
Why are they busting their collective asses for these infiltrators, trying to work out a "deal" on immigration, when all they gotta do is fund Trump's wall and enact the following immediately:
- End all anchor babies
- End travel births from Russia and China
- Enact mandatory E-verify
- Declare all sanctuary cities and states null and void
- End taxpayer funding of any programs that fund illegal aliens (in-state tuition for example)
- Any illegal arrested - immediately transferred into federal custody for deportation
- No DACA - NONE! Now that they're educated, they can return back to their own hellholes and work to make it better
- Militarization of the Southern border. Merge the Border Patrol, the Coast Guard, and Customs into a new United States Guard, and give border agents automatic weapons with shoot to kill orders
Right. The story indicates the President thought that he had been asked about the “discharge” path to forcing a vote on the bill he opposes.
I actually saw the initial report on Fox but couldn’t see that they had posted coverage online yet.
Wow, that's just not what happened. The President said he wouldn't support the moderate bill, but would support the GoodLatte bill. He's not walking back anything.
BTW, gratz on first post.
No wall....NO BILL!
25 Billion over 3 years. Build it now!
Gracias! As we may all be saying soon....
“...which prompted the president to say that he certainly wouldnt sign the more moderate one.
There was no confusion on Trump’s part this morning. Is the White House spokesman speaking for Trump? I know that there are some people working in the White House who think they know best.
Any amnesty will lose him Congress and next year hello impeachment.
Surely he cannot be that out of tune all of a sudden. There is no quicker way for him to end his presidency than that version of “read my lips, no new taxes” moment.
Not what I’ve been hearing.
Yes Trump backs a bill that contains everything he wants so there is no news here. WAPO tryimg to cause problems for Republicans
I am all for building a wall. But this is a separate issue. We can have both: a wall and no amnesty.
Besides, a promise to build a wall is worthless. It can be dropped, dragged out, or a worthless one constructed, etc. We have seen how politicians lie.
That’s all you want to know, eh?
“May your chains rest lightly upon you.”
Fake News.
Look at PDJT’s twitter.
I checked elsewhere and the White House statement was that Trump supports both immigration bills.
Probably some genius in the White House trying to set the agenda.
Because K Street and the CoC are not in favor of those items.
