The White House said Friday that President Trump supports House legislation that closely tracks his priorities on border security and limiting legal immigration, walking back comments he made on national television rejecting the GOP bill.
The reversal came after hours of confusion on Capitol Hill, where Trump’s words roiled an already fragile internal debate between conservative and moderate House Republicans who have been trying to find an immigration compromise after months of false starts.
“The president fully supports both the Goodlatte bill and the House leadership bill,” White House spokesman Raj Shah said, referring to legislation drafted by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) and a separate compromise measure.
Shah said Trump, during his “Fox and Friends” interview, was referring to an effort led by moderate House Republicans to force a series of immigration votes over the objections of the GOP leadership. Another senior White House official said Trump misunderstood the question that was posed to him, which prompted the president to say that he “certainly wouldn’t sign the more moderate one.”
House Republican leaders had teed up action on two immigration measures: a hard-line draft written by Goodlatte and legislation billed as a compromise between the moderate and conservative factions of the GOP conference.
The draft compromise bill released Thursday was written with White House input, including from top Trump immigration adviser Stephen Miller, and closely hews to the “four pillars” the administration set out in a January framework.

I’d guess that every provision of the “Moderate” bill has strings to pull back everything they seem to give.
“guaranteed funding of $25 billion for a physical wall along the Mexican border” ...over ten years, dependent on annual appropriation.
“scales back family-based immigration visas” ...and likely allows them to spring back to even higher levels at any time - maybe even adds new weasel words to allow some apparatchik to declare an exception that throws open the floodgates, as soon as folks look away.
Wall funding over ten years, legalization in ten weeks - same old song and dance.
The Goodlatte Bill was the honest policy. I’ll bet that this “moderate” one will just be the same old bum’s rush to push through a thousand page bill without letting the public see it, or Congressmen read it, before voting. Another devious attempt to let immigration transform our Country to a permanent Democratic Party majority, implement socialism, and get rid of those troublesome Constitutional checks and balances.
But the Congressmen will get to mollify their donors, for the next few months during the election fundraising push.
Well, The President did say he would not support, but a WH spokesperson Raj said that The President meant that he would not support the moderated bills proposed earlier as part of the discharge petition, he will support either of these current bills. The only difference I see is that one has a little more for the wall (Goodlatte) while the moderate bill has 25 B for the wall and other security devices. The moderate bill also addresses the children issue.

Only the clueless is not aware that DACA is the price paid for the other features. I told everyone that this would be the case a year ago. So Trump is not letting anyone with at least half a brain down.
Nor do we know if any Democrats will vote for this bill since most of it would be a bitter pill for them to swallow.
For once the Republicans are playing hardball and have the Rats in a box. If they sign on the Left will excoriate them for giving away the store. If they prevent its passage then Trump can say “The Republicans and I tried to do something about DACA but you stopped it.”
