Most of the discussion of the Trump administration's decision not to defend the Affordable Care Act and to urge the courts to throw out its protections for people with pre-existing medical conditions has focused on what happens to the individual insurance market. But the political impact may be even greater.
Why it matters: Protections for people with pre-existing conditions are hugely popular, and the administration may have handed Democrats their strongest health care weapon yet because now they can make the case that the administration has gone to court to take away protections for people with pre-existing medical conditions.
The case is also likely to drag on, so it could be the political gift that keeps on giving through 2020, even if it is eventually thrown out.

Noting will help the evil donkey now.
Look at the graft and corruption within the medical programs that are run by these politicians now . The pool of money that is taken for just medicare and medicaid is slush fund for the career hack to use in the typical round abouts way that ends up lining the rnc/dnc funds along with the huge governmental staffs and agencies that grow and spread like warts . Healthcare should be obtained just like any other service and the power and decisions need to be the individuals decision....it is NOT to be handled by a group of scumbags who omit themselves from what WE the unwashed plebians have to deal with . We all know that anything these political mafioso’s touch becomes tainted and warped from the original goal and plan . Not the governments job to be in the healthcare business. F k obama and the boondoggle of the national government run healthcare...
The solution is NOT insurance. The solution is a medical system that is more efficient, with competition and with more reasonable prices for procedures.
Insurance must take in 2 dollars for ever dollar they pay out. It spreads the risk, but does not lower prices.
The media has spoken.
President Trump keeps making the rats look bad whatever the issue. They win for a week and than he wins for the duration
The Democrats may argue and warn that the courts are about to do something unsettling as to Obamacare, but they will not get political traction until it actually happens. Indeed, even then, they will be burdened by having to explain that without the tax that Republicans repealed, Obamacare is unconstitutional. If the courts made such a declaration and made it effective before the election, I am confident that with GOP seats and control on the line, the GOP members would find a plan and quickly pass it for the sake of their own political necks.
Amendment X
I’ll wait until facts come out not some lefty’s speculation.
This is the authors opinion. Nothing more. I don’t take anything from axios or politico (same thing) seriously. In the age of Trump, most pundits dont have a clue and have lost credibility.
Nobody on the Republican side has talked about a free market in healthcare, not even the President. It's all been replacing Obamacare with another government program. The last proposal failed, Trump hasn't released his new replacement plan, and the GOP is attacking almost the only universally liked feature.
There are other ways to address the pre-existing conditions issue, but yes, the GOP needs to have its story right on it.
Which, I think we can agree, they don't.
Pre-existing condition is a difficult dilemma. Let's call it destiny which makes ALL conditions are pre-existing.
Defining pre-existing is almost impossible.
During the campaign? He sure did.
Unless the GOP continues to hand them issues to beat Republicans up with.
Good luck with that.
Absolutely.
I have always tried to bend my opinion of teenagers who are vocal in their Leftism to take into account the growing process, and they don’t have the life experiences or intellectual maturity to arrive at the appropriate conclusions.
We were all teenagers once, and there are few things as absurd as a teenager so full of themselves while being so sure of themselves. They often haven’t had the opportunity to trip and fall, and thus develop humility and introspection.
Especially not these snot-nosed tyrants.
So while I do try to have patience and tolerance for young people who speak their mind, I cannot accommodate these young people. Their unbridled vitriol against people they have no knowledge or experience of has vacated that leniency.
To your point, these people that the Leftists think constitute something “going for them”, exemplifies what is wrong with the Left. In their uncontrollable hatred, they have taken off their masks to show their true faces, and you have people like Robert DiNiro spewing disgusting profanity to High School students at what is one of the most important days of their lives, and Bill Maher wishing openly for the collapse of the economy.
Just wow.
In this case I think the media is right. Coverage for pre-existing conditions is about the only really popular part of Obamacare.
They won't use this against Trump. They'll use it against senators and congressmen, whose popularity pales in comparison with the President as it is. This won't help. They will either be forced to stand with the administration or stand against it.
I wouldn't be so sure.
If the courts made such a declaration and made it effective before the election, I am confident that with GOP seats and control on the line, the GOP members would find a plan and quickly pass it for the sake of their own political necks.
I wouldn't be so sure of that either.
Yeah explain that to the electorate.
