MEMPHIS, TENN. A Tennessee woman said she was handcuffed at a Victorias Secret in suburban Memphis on Monday because of her skin color.
Jovita Jones said an employee at Victorias Secret in Collierville forgot to remove the censor on a bra she purchased recently at the store. On Monday, she took the bra back to have the censor removed.
"I told her she could keep the bag up there. I was going to go look around the store," Jones said.
As she made her way to the dressing room with new items to purchase, Jones spotted a police officer walking toward her.
"He could have asked, Ma'am, can I search your bag? He didn't do any of that. He just came in and (slapped) handcuffs on me. He made up in his mind I was guilty," Jones said.
An employee had called police on Jones, who has no criminal record. The store tried to make things right by offering Jones a $100 gift card, but she was not satisfied.
"I told her a $100 gift card is not going to take back the discrimination, humiliation, defamation that I faced in that store that day," Jones said.

My son worked security for a big national store (you’d know the name) in Seattle. Mostly white people. : ) Almost every person he stopped for theft was black - and not just a teen doing something stupid, but moms, grandmoms, grown men, etc.
I don’t know if cameras prevent anything. There are cameras all over this type of store. The cameras help sort out the ‘lying liars who lie’ folks, but it certainly didn’t stop them from trying to get away with theft.
My daughter worked at VS while she was in college. They were told to never try to stop ANY theft. The store she worked in near her university was in a mall off a large interstate. A group of minority women walked in and within five minutes walked out with around $12,000 worth of VS merchandise.
Those women were finally caught in North Carolina with somewhere around $100,000 worth of VS stuff in their van.
Now you know why VS charges $50 for a bra and $30 for thong panties.

LOL!!!

Good point
The question that the salesperson had was not about the “CENSOR,” it was about the name “Jovita.”
It was her name that was profiled. Prolly?
Censor or sensor, whatever.
I like to think that it’s more about the way they’re dressed, the way they’re made up, and their general demeanor. I don’t trust sketchy looking whites any more than sketchy looking blacks.
It happens. And it has happened to my wife more than several times. We got tired of taking clothing items back to the store to have the sensor tag removed. So then I had the task of doing so with my shop tools. She's also purchased items online only to receive them with a sensor tag, that I have to remove without damaging the clothing. Annoying.
learned to run a register the same way... and count the change back
“Guess they didnt know how to handle the paperwork——”
Sometimes the paper work involved in something unusual is more trouble than it’s worth.
I worked for a local phone company years ago,and every so often I would get a call from someone who had found religion or was making amends in a 12 step program and they would want to pay back phone charges that they had cheated us out of YEARS before.
The ridiculous paperwork involved was so complicated I would tell them to donate it to a favorite charity and they could consider themselves absolved.
Problem solved.
.
Thats possible too given the victim culture today. However, just want to say Ive had clerks forget to take tags off and wave me through the alarm anyway, only to discover them on the item when I got home.
Are You some kind of Math Mutant ?
I've always wanted to be running a check out and reach under the counter, pull out an Abacus and slide a few rows back and forth real fast and then hand back the change. Just to mess with peoples heads.
That and:
be driving an 18 wheeler box truck, pull into a Truck Stop, back in real fast between 2 other Rigs and then jump out with sunglasses and a White Stick then make a round of the Rig tapping away checking clearance and walk in to the Cafe just to mess with people;)
oooooo sh!t, tooo funny!
hand these kids today $11.00 for a $5.75 purchase and watch them melt down...
Back in the 80s while I was running a Jaguar/RR Shop I went to the Whataburger down from the shop. The order came to $11.05, I gave the kid clerk a $20 and then remembered that I had a $1 & the $0.05 and as I said here is this the kid punched in $20 tendered just as I held it out to her.
< deer in headlights look > From kid. So I said if you take this then you can just give Me a $10 back. (I may just as well given it to the Deer in the headlights because Bambi was smarter) The kid call a Manager from the back to make sure I wasnt trying to rip them off.
Manager looks at the kid and says its OK then looks at Me and mouths Im sorry and walks off shaking Her head.
< / deer in headlights look >
I finally got the food and a $10.
I see some improvements in kids lately but I still fear for Our Country.
100%
A censor on her bra? What?
That was a good way to handle it.. Giving to charity is an excellent solution.
