MEMPHIS, TENN. A Tennessee woman said she was handcuffed at a Victorias Secret in suburban Memphis on Monday because of her skin color.
Jovita Jones said an employee at Victorias Secret in Collierville forgot to remove the censor on a bra she purchased recently at the store. On Monday, she took the bra back to have the censor removed.
"I told her she could keep the bag up there. I was going to go look around the store," Jones said.
As she made her way to the dressing room with new items to purchase, Jones spotted a police officer walking toward her.
"He could have asked, Ma'am, can I search your bag? He didn't do any of that. He just came in and (slapped) handcuffs on me. He made up in his mind I was guilty," Jones said.
An employee had called police on Jones, who has no criminal record. The store tried to make things right by offering Jones a $100 gift card, but she was not satisfied.
"I told her a $100 gift card is not going to take back the discrimination, humiliation, defamation that I faced in that store that day," Jones said.

“I volunteer to teach ALL Victoria Secrets employees Sensitivity Training TODAY!!!!!”
Anyone can come in the store with our with our without their bra now.
oops with or without their bra
I’m sure with all this talk about censorship in the liberal media and on social media platforms, I’m sure censor is a easy mistake to be made. Kinda like labeling everything conservative as racist...
I have been home twice and taken my clothes out of the bag and there was the beeper clip still attached. If no one is paying attention or they are busy you are walking g away and if they don’t see you outside, they reset the system.
“Another Its because Im black story.”
In this case that just might be the truth. Let the investigation run its course and we’ll see.
she’s playing the race card. She wants to win the “ghetto lotto”.
“”I told her a $100 gift card is not going to take back the discrimination, humiliation, defamation that I faced in that store that day,” Jones said.”
No. The “Rev.” Al told her to hold out for at least $500,000.
Nice, steal an item, bring it back to get the tag removed, then sue when you get arrested for it.
Way back when I was selling Auto Parts the favorite game the bruthers tried to play was to hand over a $20 or $50 bill for a $5 - $10 sale and then try to say that they gave Me a $100.
What they always failed to notice was that any cash I was handed got placed on the top of the cash register under a big bolt/nut until the transaction was completed.
They would try anyway and start throwing a temper tantrum when I showed them the money under the nut/bolt. Then they would leave bitching all the way out the door.
“There is no way she walked out of the store with the sensor tag still attached the first time. The racket made by those things is unbelievable. The only way would have been if it was tucked into a Faraday cage.”
RF reading is not 100% foolproof and depends on many factors. This does happen to people.
Happened to my mother several times where the tag did not beep. She had to go all the way back and have it removed.
Unfortunately you are far more likely to be assumed to be a criminal and violent if black. There is no question about it. The sales ladies were likely afraid she would get violent if they questioned anything. And they likely assumed the machine was foolproof.
You can debate “why” to the moon but there is no denying that statistically blacks commit more violent crime. It is perfectly logical to be more suspicious of black strangers. However, the law does not allow for that and they will be sued if her case is proven on camera
As always with a story like this, there is undoubtedly much more to be told. For example, a perhaps very raucous, flailing-around screaming fit which attracted the officer in the first place.
Unless this is an EXTREMELY rare case, cops dont slap handcuffs on people for nothing.

Exactly. No salesgirl would call the police just because someone returned a bra with a sensor on it. Did she have a receipt? If not, it would be easy to locate. Did the woman start acting up?
Who writes this stuff? 4th graders?
<It happens,it happened to me at Lord and Taylor.
Yeah, but did you get further than the door? I’ve had it happen (the censor was hidden and the cashier missed it) and the alarms go off like Chernobyl. How the heck did she get out of the store without setting off the alarms?
“the censor on a bra ... she took the bra back to have the censor removed.”
Very censorious.
The writer needs a sensor to find the right word to use.
Uhmmmmm.....
It’s a sensor, not a censor. A censor is a tool of progressive oppression. A sensor is a feedback device indicating a zero or a one. Sometimes it is an analog sensor indicating distance or proximity based on zero to ten volts. That is an analog proximity sensor.
Should be censored for not knowing sensors.
“Yeah, but did you get further than the door?”
Yes,I got out the door-—that was my point-—apparently a faulty sensor.
I got home——and then had to waste another 90 minutes going back to have it removed.

You must have worked in Memphis.
