MEMPHIS, TENN. A Tennessee woman said she was handcuffed at a Victorias Secret in suburban Memphis on Monday because of her skin color.
Jovita Jones said an employee at Victorias Secret in Collierville forgot to remove the censor on a bra she purchased recently at the store. On Monday, she took the bra back to have the censor removed.
"I told her she could keep the bag up there. I was going to go look around the store," Jones said.
As she made her way to the dressing room with new items to purchase, Jones spotted a police officer walking toward her.
"He could have asked, Ma'am, can I search your bag? He didn't do any of that. He just came in and (slapped) handcuffs on me. He made up in his mind I was guilty," Jones said.
An employee had called police on Jones, who has no criminal record. The store tried to make things right by offering Jones a $100 gift card, but she was not satisfied.
"I told her a $100 gift card is not going to take back the discrimination, humiliation, defamation that I faced in that store that day," Jones said.

I had a family member who owned a store in a mall.
Despite the location having 90% white customers, she said 90% of her shoplifting problems were from black customers.
She also had to stop taking checks, because every time she took one from a black person it bounced, and she spent hours in court trying to collect, which never happened even after a judgement. And she could not put up a sign saying “no checks from black people”
She used to be a flaming liberal- but after a while she said she felt like she had to follow them around any time they came in to the store because it seemed like every single time something came up missing.
Finally I told her you’re wasting your time CATCHING shoplifters, put cameras up everywhere (real and fake) to PREVENT it.
How is personal experience racism. 12% of the population is responsible for 45% of all crime- and when you remove children and old people it’s more like 6% responsible for 45%.
Or maybe it is because I stop if I hear the beep.
But I have never managed to leave a store with the tag still inadvertently attached.
They always make a loud annoying screech that would wake up the dead.
That’s a bar, not a bra.
I hate bars.
It happened to me, too! At Lord and Taylor’s 20 years ago. Got home and found this humongous plastic security tag on my jeans.
I worked at A&S 35 yrs ago.. Security was always catching people shoving merchandise into their bags then going up to the register to “return” them.. It was a huge problem.
It probably did. She was moving too fast to stop her in time, they let it roll while noting the who that was doing the thieving. Being alerted when the idjit brought it back in to remove the 'censor' because she couldn't wear whatever the piece was, they called PoPo. I wonder, did the censor trigger when she came back through the doors?
WOW
Who is that?
Another, because so many other Blacks shoplift the store has learned to be leery of Black customers pulling a very popular scam on them and acted to prevent what they thought was more loss. The store did nothing wrong.
Now the police officer could have spoken to her before slapping the cuffs on.
I think it can be deactivated but still left on.
“It happened to me, too! At Lord and Taylors 20 years ago.”

Interesting, because in my case it was also also 20 years ago-———hope they have corrected THAT problem.
.
My experiences were 10 years ago at penny and mays. Maybe the system wasn’t as consistent then. I don’t know. i have heard the alarm and stopped at several places. I think most honest people would.
Then, methought, the air grew denser, perfumed from an unseen censer
Swung by Seraphim whose foot-falls tinkled on the tufted floor.
I guess it is possible. I have bought used books that still had that tag in them.
“censor”
Looks like the writer of the story removed the Editor though. LOL
I once left a store with the sensor attached to an item and no alarm sounded. I had to go back and have it removed after I tried on the item at home. I did have the receipt, though.
As for having a “censor” attached to one’s bra...whoa! I don’t think any of us have ever had that happen!
The only sensor related thing I can offer is that I apparently have a dead ambient air temperature sensor go bad this morning.
Yay....
Why didn’t the sensor go off when she returned to the store?
Sounds like product tampering.
More sloppy reporting. not only did they misspell sensor,
there’s no mention of whether the woman had a receipt or not.
Also why wouldn’t people assume that an item with a sensor still on it was not stolen?
there’s no curiosity on the reporters part to get all the important details.
Its just another its waycism assumption by a media moron.
“It doesnt say she had a receipt for the original bra.”
She could have stole one and bought one. Then brought back the stolen one to have the sensor removed.
Because they ‘forget’ to remove the tags on items all the time.
Everyone is looking for a Payday.
