Gavin Newsom and John Cox advance to November election in California's governor's race
CNN ^

CNN projected Republican John Cox will finish in the top two, and advance to the general election in the California governor’s race.

Cox, a San Diego businessman, was endorsed by President Trump. Republicans feared they could be shut out of the governor’s race in November, which could have depressed GOP voter turnout and adversely affected the party's congressional candidates.

Former Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was attempting a political comeback in the race, but will fall short of making the general election.

Anyone knows about how good she is? Will she be a great swamp dweller? I might donate to her campaign...

Good news to wake up to. Just maybe because of the incredible results Pres. Trump has had with the economy, some are starting to wonder if they want the same ole politician or a results oriented businessman. I recently read where some non-radical millenials are starting to re-think their indoctrination. Gives me some hope.

Not going to happen and people who delude themselves into thinking Cox can beat Newsom will be in for a ride Awakening in November.

Newsom has been the "Governor-in-Waiting" for fifteen years, much like Gray Davis in the 90s . He's younger, better-looking than Cox, and hands out free stuff. So he's certain to win this time - but like Davis, likely to prove so incompetent in office that he will be vulnerable to a future recall election challenge from an opponent with sufficient star power.

If Newsom survives as Governor for a few years, he is the certain Democrat Presidential nominee for 2024 - after they learn the firm and final lesson in 2020 that Obama was the Last Ever Black President.

If the Cox campaign shows any signs of life it deserves
every damn bit of help it can get from the RNC. If
his campaign can excite enough Republicans to come out
and vote for Cox and the local GOP congressional candidate
then it could keep the Democrats from taking over the
house. That is not me talking, that is Trump.

The closest thing to vulnerable the ‘Rats have been in
a long time is right now in California. We need to go for
it now and if we fail we need to scuff the hell out
of them and make them work. I laid out some of their
vulnerabilities. We need to hit those instead of
giving lazy ass Newscum a free ride.

One would hope. Newsom really is a despicable human being. I hope Cox is the real thing, not a goof or a crackpot like the GOP has been heaving up In winnable contests in recent elections.

Even if it isn't, it's in play, which means that Dems will have to spend scant resources holding onto California.

You have a lot of Freepers in denial about CA’s demographic and political reality.

Yep. Total votes cast for all the Republican candidates on the ballot was 37.4%. Cox will top out at 40%. Newsom does not even have to campaign to win this. I wish it were different. Cox's job here is to get R voters out to help down ticket races and minimize losses. Just having him on the ballot is a win.

Well, well, well.... the latest data shows Newsom won a landslide victory with 61.3% of the vote, the biggest victory in a gubernatorial race in California since 1950, and Cox barely mustered 38%.

I wonder if the all FReepers who pimped Cox in the primary and claimed he was "within striking distance" and would "put the Governor's race in play for the GOP" are having buyer's remorse now. Travis Allen was a far better choice, IMO.

I'm from Illinois so I got to see numerous Cox campaigns "in action" before he decided to carpetbag in your state. Nice guy, but utterly clueless how to appeal to voters.

To be fair. Cox was an awful candidate and didn’t even TRY!!! Barely campaigned! Inarticulate, uncompelling, the list goes on.

And he made it a point to distance himself from Trump.

Regardless see my election night post: “The Future of California is not Democrat, but Independent.”
