Gavin Newsom and John Cox advance to November election in California's governor's race
CNN ^

Posted on 06/05/2018 10:22:25 PM PDT by CondoleezzaProtege

CNN projected Republican John Cox will finish in the top two, and advance to the general election in the California governor’s race.

Cox, a San Diego businessman, was endorsed by President Trump. Republicans feared they could be shut out of the governor’s race in November, which could have depressed GOP voter turnout and adversely affected the party's congressional candidates.

Former Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was attempting a political comeback in the race, but will fall short of making the general election.

I don’t agree with her prior political statements, but if there is anything Duchess Meghan Markle (from CALIFORNIA) and the Royal Wedding teaches...it’s that anything is possible.

oh man! Agree! It could also be the thing that gives us a bit more traction. These fascists just keep piling it on. May the evil spine break under its weight. The shame left these thieves long ago. They don’t even care to play like they care anymore. They’ve gotten away with so much, for so long, and the voters have let them or they’ve had it and moved. We are the hardened ones that aren’t fleeing. We’re here to fight and win. ;D

Young Kim? Is he Korean? That is great. I live in a heavily Korean district in L.A...even ran into one of the (unimpressive) Democrat state assembly candidates for my district outside coffee shop today.

Sure but not in CA.

Its overrun by liberals and as things stand, a conservative has NO chance to win a statewide election.

But Cox can turnout GOP voters to help keep the House.

Looks like the only district in danger of flipping is District 49.

Maybe Antonio can spend more time studying for the Bar Exam.

_______________________________

I think Larry Elder, the talk show host, mentioned that Antonio V. failed to pass the Bar Exam...

I expected Antonio V. to do better...Newsom won L.A. County by getting 30.86%. Antonio V. came in second. He got 22.01%. Really? He was the mayor of Los Angeles for 8 years. He could not even win L.A. County...

I did not see any Cox ad on TV...But, I did see a few Antonio V. ads on TV...I guess those ads did not really work.

I think House losses will be minimal.

This country does NOT need nor deserve - San Fran Nan as Speaker.

But Cox didn’t vote for Trump even though Trump
endorsed him. I’d be a little surprised if Cox
requested any Trump help at this point. Newsom will be
campaigning against Cox and Trump. Cox will campaign
against Newsom and Brown but he will have to do the
the MSM’s job for them (big surprise) since Brown
and Newsom were never scrutinized. Hated gas tax...
homeless situation....unfunded mandates...train to
nowhere...water rationing....taxes....sanctuary cities
are all issues that MIGHT cause more problems for
Newsom than many outsiders may think.

National GOP campaign type heavy hitters and $$ needed
for Cox to have any kind of a shot at Gavin Newscum.
Slim hopes abound.

I believe Antonio is 0/4 in taking the Bar Exam.

Looks like the blue wave hit a seawall - apathetic turnout for the Dems and a Rep in the top-two in Dem-coveted seats. Add in sore-loser Villagarosa demanding voting be kept open for 3 more days for giggles and it was a pretty good day for Republicans.

I don’t know.

Here is the section from his Wikipedia page, about “Donald Trump”:

Relationship with Donald Trump[edit]

While Cox previously did not support Donald Trump early in the gubernatorial campaign or in the 2016 presidential election, instead voting for Gary Johnson, he now says he supports Trump and says that voting for Johnson was “a mistake”.[27] Cox was endorsed by Trump on May 18, 2018[28] and he has been portrayed as Trump’s protégé in advertising from Gavin Newsom.[29]

Early in his gubernatorial Campaign, Cox attempted to distance himself from Donald Trump and his administration. When asked about Trump, he stated to Politico “...no comment. Was that fast enough for you?” [30] While Cox would later reveal he voted for Libertarian presidential Candidate Gary Johnson in 2016, he declined to state whether he had supported Trump during the 2016 election, commenting “I know my opponents will try to tie me to Mr. Trump. I am not Mr. Trump...I’m analytical, I’m policy-oriented. I read five newspapers a day. I’m not a reality TV star that’s going to insult people. I’m going to try to rally people.”[31] Cox’s support for the Libertarian ticket in 2016 and his ambivalence toward President Trump has drawn criticism of his views as aligning with the Never Trumper movement.[32]

President Donald Trump endorsed John Cox in May 19, 2018 via Twitter stating “California finally deserves a great Governor, one who understands borders, crime and lowering taxes”.[28] His daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, has also endorsed him.[33] On May 28, 2018, Trump tweeted a further endorsement of Cox as “...a really good and highly competent man”.[34]

That is from wikipedia page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_H._Cox

Seems like the two of them, can work together.

Maybe. :D

No.

But Trump does have party coattails.

He endorsed Cox who not only won but managed to finish second and make it to November.

Its Trump’s party now.

Indeed! To be capable of marrying a conservative... It makes me want to think that he may have some good sense left in him somewhere...but...no.

______________________________

Newsom was a businessman before he got into politics...

I don’t see how anybody could call him a “moderate”...
After all, he is for single payer health plans...He does not support death penalty...

OK...John Cox does not support death penalty either...But, he is conservative on other issues...I guess there is no such thing as a “perfect” candidate...

If Cox wins the governorship in the end, this will be the end of their ‘jungle primary’ system.
