OAKLAND (CBS SF) — California Women’s head basketball Lindsay Gottlieb was confronted at the Denver airport by a Southwest Airlines employee who questioned her relationship to her infant bi-racial son before she could board a flight.
Gottlieb took to Twitter Sunday night to file a series of posts complaining about her treatment.
“I’m appalled that after approx 50 times flying with my 1-year-old son ticket counter personnel told me that I had to “prove” that he was my son despite having his passport,” she tweeted in one post. “She said we have a different last name. My guess is because he has a different skin color.”
Gottlieb gave birth to Jordan Peter Martin — whose father is African-American — on May 7, 2017. The little boy traveled often — flying Southwest at times — with the Cal basketball team this past season.
The Cal coach tweeted that after showing the ticket personnel Jordan’s passport — she asked to see a Facebook post to further verify her parentage.
“She 1st asked for proof with a birth certificate,” Gottlieb tweeted. “She then said it was a ‘federal law’ but asked me to prove I was the mother with a Facebook post. What?? The mother next to me said she’s never been asked for proof diff last name…not shockingly, not mixed face family.”
“I do feel like as a white female, with a position of privilege, and a platform where someone is going to listen, it is my responsibility to say, hey, this happened, this isn’t okay,” Gottlieb said in an interview with KPIX 5. “And maybe somewhere down the line, that helps my son, who is bi-racial and will be for his entire life.”
In a statement to KPIX 5, Southwest apologized and said it was launching an investigation into the incident.
“We’re looking into this specific interaction, and we have engaged with the customer directly to address her concerns,” the statement read. “Our employees are well regarded for their hospitality and we always strive for the best experience for anyone who entrusts us with their travel.”
Gottlieb said she did not believe it reflected the attitude of the airline.
“I suspect it was just one insensitive employee,” she said. “It hurt my feelings. It made me feel a little bit less than and it’s not okay.”

I wonder how appalled she would have been, if someone got a hold of her child and the Passport, and was leaving town with him, and they hadn’t been challenged.

She admits she doesnt know the agent’s intentions and supposes it might have been due to skin color. That doesnt stop her from making a public fuss about it that might cost the agent her job, reputation and social media abuse. The agent was in a position of damned if you do or damned if you don’t depending on the mother’s whim.

You are 100% correct! The airline employees are trained to search for discrepancies in these instances. What would happen to the Southwest employee who let a woman kidnap a child with a fake passport and who is of different ethnicity? Fired!
I agree with that characterization of a no win position.
Yes, the mother is just shooting her mouth off, and of course the media runs with it, anything to destroy any semblance of legitimate authority in this nation.
My wife uses her maiden name for work reasons (only- it’s complicated) and has been been given the third degree with our children having my name more than a few times.

Suing, yes, me too! But I just don’t understand all this “regulation freelancing” at the ticket counter and boarding gate. This isn’t rocket science, and yet day after day one airline or another has an employee who “manages to step in it!”

When my nephew brought his three-old daughter home from Thailand, he was grilled for several hours by DHS agents, questioning whether she was really his child, and if he really had permission to travel from the childs mother.
A week later, embassy DHS agents in Bangkok grilled my nephews wife for more than an hour until Thai police intervened, stopped the interrogation and pulled her out of the embassy. The Thai police said they would not allow a Thai citizen to be interrogated like that again without Thai government lawyers being present.

Yes, if it turned out she WAS part of a child trafficking ring and Southwest missed such obvious clues it would be in big trouble.
I think I'm usually in the row in front of them, trying to tune out the crying and ignore the seat being kicked.

Why can’t someone just be glad that an airline worker is vigilantly trying to protect against child trafficking? Does this woman really think that a couple of extra questions at the airline counter, having no effect on her ability to travel, i.e. make the flight, are really not worth the possibility that a single child might be saved from being kidnapped and taken out of the country?!!!
It happens. My nephew, lily white, has a dark black wife. They were returning from vacationing in Mexico with their infant son who has pale light skin and has latino looks as a mixed-race child. Black mom had difficulty with the Mexican authorities, and had to spend a long time arguing with them that the infant boy was her child. Even though they had all the necessary documents. After that, they no longer want to visit Mexico. Sort of like Meghan Markle appearing white despite a black mom, their boy has white features and a dark black mom.
