Portland, Ore., bakery caved to a disgruntled customers allegations of racism and fired two employees after they wouldnt serve a customer because the shop was closed.
Back to Eden Bakery sent multiple apologies and public statements admitting its racist because it refused to serve a black woman who entered the shop after hours and asked to buy a pastry even though the shop had closed.
The incident occurred in early May and is now circulating in the news, garnering a strong public response on Facebook and social media. A woman named only as Lillian entered the bakery at 9:06 p.m. after the shop had already closed, according to the bakeshops Facebook post about the event. Confusion arose because the shop was unusually busy for the late hour and there were still a few customers in line who the shop agreed to serve but whod been informed the shop was officially closed. The lighted Open sign had been turned off.

What a lot of people don’t understand is a lot of times they can’t/don’t serve them because the register has already been closed out. I never worked in a bakery type establishment but did work with the public and registers. When it was closing time the first thing I did was Z out the register and count the money to make sure everything was balanced. Everything else came after. And if there’s more than 1 person working usually 1 is closing the register while the other is cleaning and doing back up work.
While this falls into poor customer service, I don’t consider it racism, and what should have been nothing more than an apology and a teachable moment turns into a national news story and firings.
It’s racist because it was after-hours? Then let the fatass manager rush down and serve the “customer”.
“Good luck staying in business, Blomgren, when your Caucasian customers desert you.”
Yes, cuz dey be de ones wif all de money!
???
They refused to turn their heater on?
They refused to turn their heater off?
They supply hot-from-the-oven baked goods, but only for bearded Orthodox clergy??
`
This is a new one to me.
Maybe they could cut the travel time by putting down the baked goods and streamline their fat asses.
I sympathize with the employees but they shouldve locked the door and how hard would it have been to get her a box of donuts and earn brownie points plus extra cash for the business?
But after reading this -
We are doing business in a gentrified neighborhood in a racist city within a racist state of a racist country
Let the business burn.
Because the bakery had not locked its doors, and was still serving people in line, they probably should have gone ahead and locked the door and then served the person. But the fact that they didn’t, has absolutely NOTHING to do with racism. If you’re in a Wal-Mart that isn’t 24 hours, and they announce the store is now closed, they’re definitely going to check out whatever customers are still in the store. If someone forgot to lock the door, and one more person got in, they’re not going to refuse to check her out. The cashier has no way of knowing that that person wasn’t already in the store. The bakery staff screwed up by not locking the door. Period. But where’s the racism? There ISN’T any.
Imagine thinking to yourself that people cleaning up after a business is closed, should be fired for not serving you. Imagine yourself demanding it. Imagine an owner being stupid enough to betray the trust of their employees, and stab them in he back by firing them at your request.
And people get angry because some folks think they are stupid.
Rules don’t apply to certain highly-privileged people. “Closed” means “you have to serve me or I be make a video and get yo a$$ all over da internet.”
Free rolls now to all non-Whites. The store will have to station an employee after closing time, to let non-Whites in and serve them.
I can see now that the LEAST little meaningless event that involves a non-White will be splashed all over the internet, and on radio and TV for months after.
They reason that, if there are enough events, they can push reparations through.
I suspect a lot of the serve/don’t serve decision depends on the customer attitude.
I can tell from the story this customer had a defective attitude.
I’ve had to close many a till...someone coming in after hours would muck everything up...I’d have to work overtime, and the boss would be irate.
Apparently, due to the historical and current crimes of slavery and discrimination that have been committed against them, black people are now entitled to sit, sleep, shit, pee, eat, fight, bbq, when and where they want, free of charge, and anyone who has a problem with it is a racist!
You lost me at “but”.
The owner set the hours. The employees followed the rules.
The customer broke them.
The owner broke them.
Two people lost their livelihood because a dumb ass decided to play the race card, and a dimwit owner accepted it.
From the "bakery":
When you got yer leftover Africanos at closing-time prices??
WOW
