In the sunset of John McCain’s 60-year service to the nation — first in the Navy and then in the United States Senate —filmmakers Peter, Teddy and George Kunhardt were granted extraordinary access to the senator and his family last summer as he started down the hardest road of his life so far: battling stage 4 brain cancer.
“He is the Republican lion of the senate,” Teddy Kunhardt tells PEOPLE before his almost two-hour documentary, John McCain: For Whom the Bell Tolls, debuts May 28 on HBO.
The filmmakers found everyone from Barack Obama to George W. Bush to longtime friend Joe Biden extremely eager to make time to pay tribute to McCain on camera. And while much has been made about the deep bonds between McCain, Lindsey Graham and Joe Lieberman, filmmakers were surprised to discover a real warmth between McCain and 2016 democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
“She genuinely loves this guy and thinks the world of him,” says George Kunhardt. “They both lit up when we discussed them with each other. They both genuinely love each other. It was a very emotional and touching thing from our point of view.”

I’m trying to squelch my imagination...
Maybe, maybe not. However, when he said, "Senator Obama would make a decent President" or words to that effect, I knew he would lose. Plus, he didn't support the main source of his conservative base, Sarah Palin. I don't recall anyone I knew that voted for McCain. They voted for Sarah Palin.
I knew from his Keating 5 days that he was at the very least, questionable.
We need a list to counter this love-fest documentary to show he is two-faced and walked away from us conservatives to remain in The Club. His love for Hillary? That alone shows how wrong and Deep State he is.
As for McCain being a hero for getting shot down, what happened to all the other "heros" in those POW camps? Ever hear anything about them? McCain, like all other in-country military are not heroes just because they do their duty. That is what is expected of them. Those who go above and beyond the call of duty are Heroes. Of course, that happens all the time in our extended wars, but do they get hero status? No. Think SEALS, Delta Force, Marine Recon, Air Force ground spotters, not to mention basic Marine and Army grunts in-country who risk more in basic fire-fights.
All military members should be admired and respected for their service for our great Nation. However, under this new definition of hero, if my ship had been blown up by Soviet subs shadowing us constantly, I guess I would have been a hero while only doing my duty. End rant.
In an interview on his porch, McCain revealed a shocker regarding his choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate for his 2008 presidential run.“I should have said: ‘Look, Joe Lieberman is my best friend, we should take him,’ ” McCain says in the film. “But I was persuaded by my political advisers it would be harmful, and that was another mistake that I made.”
