Volcano’s Lava Flows Into Power Plant, Sparking Fears Of Deadly Gas Release

Emergency workers in Hawaii are racing to protect a geothermal power plant near the Kilauea Volcano. Slow-moving molten rock entered the site and is just a few hundred yards from the wells. There is concern lava could trigger the release of deadly hydrogen sulfate gas...

Lava continued its steady advance toward the Puna Geothermal Venture Plant before stalling late Monday. The facility is shut down, but the wells there still present a risk if overrun with the molten rock.

“It’s not easy to predict where it’s going to go, and when it’s going to get there,” said Tom Travis, of Hawaii Emergency Management.

Flammable liquids have already been removed and the wells have been filled with cold water, but won’t be plugged until today. A worst-case scenario could be catastrophic.

“There’s a steam release, many chemicals, but primarily hydrogen sulfate, a very deadly gas,” Travis said.

Hydrogen sulfate? That would be H2SO4. Also known as sulfuric acid.

“geothermal power”

Eco-nazis claim earthquake risks for fracking.

So, I guess these eruptions were triggered by the geothermal wells.

Nature is taking over The Big Island.

I suspect it is lost to humans.

I also fear there will be a massive eruption very soon. I do not wish this (I was there about 2 years ago and found it to be delightful even outside the helicopter ride over the lava floes). But I predict this.

They should pass a law that Geothermal plants should not be allowed anywhere near global hotspots. If it saves one life ...

I’ve bicycled by this plant numerous times. It’s in the Leilani neighborhood and since day one it’s probably been shut down, protected, and anything of danger removed or turned off whatever.

The article is typical Fake News, sensational journalism.

Who was the genius that decided to build the plant there?

The entire Island is not at risk, that just isn’t possible. The island as you know is massive and Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea are so big that any blast would be shielded by those behemoths. Loa is 500x the size of Mt Rainier outside of Seattle.

It was built there because they haven’t had lava around there in at least a couple hundred years. It’s also in a place that has an ideal setting for geo thermal power. Plus, they probably got all sorts of Fed money to build it by some Dem administration hell bent on throwing away tax payer money...

Who let the lava in the plant in the first place?

Was it delivering candygrams?

Who were the geniuses who gave residential building permits and allowed thousands of people to live in the East Rift Zone.

BTW, saw a local pol interviewed a couple of days ago. Looks like HI wants the other 49 to pay for this. Which bugs the living heck outta me.

My sister’s house so far has not burned down, or been covered in Lava. Trouble is, without doing so, she can’t get any insurance for the loss of her home.

The locals lived very nice in Leilani! The lots were cheap and they took a very well known risk in building there. Very sad to see this area lost, as it made ANY other place I’ve been in the Hawaiian Islands look boring in comparison. Even with mostly left wing types in the community, I truly loved it there. In just 5 years I was there about 8 times.

How about this, we return their “native” son who can calm the oceans and quell the skies with his banter.

I don’t understand how the wells can pose a threat if lava reaches them. As for the sensationalism, I haven’t seen that in the local press. In fact, they tend to underplay. And they’re sure not covering the deficiencies that got them here.
