Romney denounces pastor slated to speak at US embassy in Jerusalem
The Hill ^ | 05/13/18 10:50 PM | BRANDON CONRADIS

Senate candidate and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) on Sunday night denounced the pastor expected to speak at Monday's ceremony celebrating the opening of the new U.S. embassy in Jerusalem.

"Robert Jeffress says 'you can’t be saved by being a Jew,' and 'Mormonism is a heresy from the pit of hell.' He’s said the same about Islam. Such a religious bigot should not be giving the prayer that opens the United States Embassy in Jerusalem," Romney tweeted.

Jeffress, a Dallas-based pastor and known supporter of President Trump, said over the weekend that he would be leading the prayer at the dedication of the new embassy. Trump announced in December that he was relocating the embassy to Jerusalem, a move that drew international condemnation and sparked concerns of a widening conflict in the Middle East.

According to a report from Haaretz, Jeffress has made derogatory remarks about Islam in the past, calling it "a religion that promotes pedophilia" and a "heresy from the pit of hell."

He has also called Mormonism "a cult" that is not a true part of Christianity and said "you can't be saved by being a Jew," Haaretz reported.

Jeffress endorsed Romney, who is Mormon, for president back in 2012, despite derogatory comments the pastor made at the time about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

After reading the posts on this thread I find once again that organized Religion is the refuge of a bunch of egomaniacs.

I take great solace in my belief that we will be judged by God, not by these people.
.......................................................

And everyone here that you would decry as an ‘egomaniac’ would agree with your second statement.

Where you truly differ with anyone commenting here is that we realize that sometimes a little air freshener is necessary after we use the bathroom.

One of the rare cases where both is right. Why would you have this guy at this event? Doesn’t seem well thought out.
........................................................
Which statement from Romney do you consider correct?

I’d like to see stuck in nola’s answer to this, as well.

“Such a religious bigot should not be giving the prayer that opens the United States Embassy in Jerusalem”

Entirely appropriate.
Horses for Courses, Mitt.

Same goes for Jarvanka’s presence.

In this evil world, professing Christ as the ONLY WAY to Salvation & God is radical.

Count me in as “radical”. :)

Read it a little slower he is quoted as saying, you cant be saved by being a Jew. You have twisted it into something else.

He didn’t say you couldn’t be saved if you’re a Jew. He said you cannot be saved by being a Jew. Big difference between what he said and what you say he said. You’re wrong in both fact and in youre quoting of him. Jews can be saved and be both a Jew and a Christian.

Of the three religions mentioned by Mitt, only the comments about Judaism matter in this situation. I could see some issue if Dr. Jeffress has made some intemperate statements about the Jewish faith in the past. It could make for some awkward political situations.

What Mitt claimed that Dr. Jeffress said about Mormonism isn't outrageous - it is simply common sense. Yes, and since it's been brought up, Mormonism is a heresy from hell.

The activity is a “diplomatic” one, whether it involves a prayer by anyone or not, and for that reason I think the choice of the particular pastor is a wrong and an unnecessary choice. There is a time to preach and a time to bring others together with you. I hope Trump changes the schedule of events.

Best reply so far. Thanks. He Jeffries represents the core of Israel’s politcal support in the US which is conservative evangelical christians. The very ones who believe unconverted Jews are going to hell (but that is true of all unconverted people) are Israel’s most vociferous supporters. The paradox is almost unexplainable except to conservative, reformed, or Orthodox Jews.

And people are paying attention to Mitt? Why? After he attended the Bash Catholicism Met Gala, he’s about the last person who should be shooting his mouth about religion.

Hi Elsie. Haven’t heard from you in a while. And. Romney is an idiot. I’m not in Utah so I can’t vote against him but I hope he loses.

I wonder if the expression, “talking out of his hat”, an euphemism for a lie, was started here.

The most support I ever experienced for Israel was within the gated community in Texas I lived in for seven years. There were virtually no Jews, but the evangelicals there were very supportive. My next-door neighbor had a sign in his window, “We Stand With Israel!”

Mormonism: “space cadet ‘theology’”, a cult that is right up there with “Scientology”.

Pastor Jeffers is Christ-centered, biblical, doctrinally and theologically sound. That is hardly "radical".

If people have a problem with Pastor Jeffers, their problem is with the Lord Jesus Christ and with biblical doctrine and with "the offense of the Gospel of Christ".

Feel free to examine my FR profile as to my qualifications to make the above assessment.

I’d have to know EXACTLY what Jeffries said about the Jews

Here is how Wikipedia quotes Jeffress from a verbal interview:

"...Judaism, you can't be saved being a Jew, you know who said that by the way, the three greatest Jews in the New Testament, Peter, Paul, and Jesus Christ, they all said Judaism won't do it, it's faith in Jesus Christ."

To clarify, as Jeffress immediately did, being a Jew is not in itself a bar to heaven; rather, relying only on being Jewish instead of on Jesus' substitutionary atonement is.

Homosexuals hate Pastor Jeffers because he tells the truth concerning homosexuality. He did a series of biblical, doctrinally and theologically sound messages on the topic and turned those messages into the book entitled “Hell Yes!”.

“I could see some issue if Dr. Jeffress has made some intemperate statements about the Jewish faith in the past. It could make for some awkward political situations.”

I would imagine that there would be a Rabbi (perhaps from Israel?) to be offering prayers at the opening of the Embassy as well. I’m pretty sure if asked (or if all of his history was perused), the Rabbi’s thoughts on if Christians get to heaven would also make for awkward conversation.

I think moving the embassy to Jerusalem is not only a great political act, but a great act in faith as well. Two different religions CAN “COEXIST” and have some common goals, and not resort to lopping heads off due to their obvious different views when it comes to God.
