~ Hall of Heroes ~ Leroy A. Mendonca Info from here. |
|
Leroy A. Mendonca was born in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, on 2 August 1932, and is of Portuguese ancestry. While attending President William McKinley High School, he was a AJROTC cadet, and graduated in 1950 as a soldier in the United States Army during the Korean War. He posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his actions on July 4, 1951. |
Rank and organization: Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company B, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division Place and date: Near Chich-on, Korea, July 4, 1951 Entered service at: Honolulu, T.H. Birth: Honolulu, T.H. G.O. No.: 83, September 3, 1952 Citation:
Sgt. LeRoy A. Mendonca, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy. After his platoon, in an exhaustive fight, had captured Hill 586, the newly won positions were assaulted during the night by a numerically superior enemy force. When the 1st Platoon positions were outflanked and under great pressure and the platoon was ordered to withdraw to a secondary line of defense, Sgt. Mendonca voluntarily remained in an exposed position and covered the platoon's withdrawal. Although under murderous enemy fire, he fired his weapon and hurled grenades at the onrushing enemy until his supply of ammunition was exhausted. He fought on, clubbing with his rifle and using his bayonet until he was mortally wounded. After the action it was estimated that Sgt. Mendonca had accounted for 37 enemy casualties. His daring actions stalled the crushing assault, protecting the platoon's withdrawal to secondary positions, and enabling the entire unit to repel the enemy attack and retain possession of the vital hilltop position. Sgt. Mendonca's extraordinary gallantry and exemplary valor are in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Army.
In 2001, the Bob Hope-class roll on roll off vehicle cargo ship USNS Mendonca was commissioned in the Military Sealift Command, and named in honor of Sergeant Mendonca. |
Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families. This is a politics-free zone! Thanks for helping us in our mission! |

Not What It Seems
May 14, 2018
Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.
1 John 4:1
Listen! my wife said to me over the phone. Theres a monkey in our yard! She held up the phone so I could hear. And yes, it sounded just like a monkey. Which is weird, because the nearest wild monkey was 2,000 miles away.
Later, my father-in-law burst our bubble. Thats a barred owl, he explained. Reality was not what it had seemed.
When King Sennacheribs armies had Judahs King Hezekiah trapped inside Jerusalems walls, the Assyrians thought victory was theirs. Reality proved different. Although the Assyrian field commander used smooth words and pretended to speak for God, the Lord had His hand on His people.
Have I come to attack and destroy this place without word from the Lord? the commander asked (2 Kings 18:25). As he tried to entice Jerusalem to surrender, he even said, Choose life and not death! (v. 32).
That sounds like something God would say. But the prophet Isaiah told the Israelites the true words of the Lord. [Sennacherib] will not enter this city or shoot an arrow here, God said. I will defend this city and save it (19:3234; Isaiah 37:35). That very night the angel of the Lord destroyed the Assyrians (v. 35).
From time to time, well encounter smooth-talking people who advise us while denying Gods power. That isnt Gods voice. He speaks to us through His Word. He guides us with His Spirit. His hand is on those who follow Him, and He will never abandon us.
Teach us to discern Your voice, Lord.
God is always trustworthy.

Weak turnout, but I found out there was conflicting events. So most of our people were elsewhere. I just wish someone would have told me.
Gonna be a busy week.

Howdy, Kathy.
Had a nice relaxing day or did you get “industrious”? :-)
Pretty quiet here though I did yank sticky weeds out of one flower bed.

Staying home and staying cool sounds ideal!
I did the same. LOL! I did step outside a few minutes this evening to yank a few weeds from one flower bed. That was enough!
Been watching livestream of the newest fissure that opened up at HI most of the day. I’d heard on TV that it was a noisy one and they weren’t kidding! Incredible sight and sounds. Yikes! They just saw a boulder fly to a house! They didn’t say if the house was hit though.
The kittehs have behaved for the most part but Lily’s gone into “brat mode” a few times.
