By bizarrely going after Sam Harris, Majid Nawaaz, and others, the once venerable organization has abandoned its core mission, focusing instead on dirty partisan politics
Shortly after the election of Donald Trump in November of 2016, a lot of people I knew wrote biggish checks to the Southern Poverty Law Center. They werent alone: According to tax filings, the group took in $136 million last year alone, bringing its total assets to a whopping half-a-billion dollars.
This surge in the organizations popularity makes sense: The SPLC, after all, is the group that had once, nearly four decades ago, protected Vietnamese shrimpers from the Klan in Galveston Bay, sued several white supremacist groups out of existence, and delivered justice to the family Mulugeta Seraw, an Ethiopian student bludgeoned to death by members of a Neo-Nazi group in Portland, Oregon. Youd think that an organization with such a gleaming record would be richly deserving of support, particularly as far-right thugs are once again openly on the march.
Then again, you could ask Sam Harris.
In late March, the SPLC included a piece about the best-selling author in its daily Hatewatch Headlines, a compilation of media reports on bigots, thugs, and other assorted creeps. Why was the neuroscientist and prominent atheist thrown in together with Mark Anthony Conditt, the Austin bomber who had murdered two black men, and Nazi war criminal Jakiw Palij? Because Harris defended Charles Murray, a political scientist best-known for arguing that genetic differences may account for varying levels of intelligence between races. The assertion drove many in academia and journalism to label Murray a racist; he was famously shouted out of an appearance at Middlebury College last March, and was labeled a White Nationalist and an extremist by the SPLC. But when the prominent Harvard geneticist David Reich echoed Murrays ideas in a New York Times op-ed last montharguing that it is simply no longer possible to ignore average genetic differences among racesHarris took several of Murrays critics to task on Twitter, including Voxs Ezra Klein. Klein responded in his typically obfuscating fashion, doing little to discuss the ideas at hand and a lot to strangle them with potent ideological terms. White men discussing the possibility of genetic differences between blacks and whites wasnt science, Klein thunderedit was racism pure and simple, facts and findings be damned. The SPLC was quick to mirror this sentiment, placing Harris on its HateWatch list.
This was far from the first time that the SPLC applied the blunt force of its historic reputation to label political opponents as racists or extremists. Harriss co-author, Majid Nawaaz, experienced the organizations wrath as well. A former radical Islamist who spent four years in an Egyptian prison, Nawaaz abandoned his zealotry and committed his life to promoting a pluralistic and non-violent version of Islam, a mission that led him to serve as an advisor to three British Prime Ministers. In the fall of 2016, however, Nawaaz was placed on the SPLCs list of anti-Muslim extremists, widely disseminated with the header a journalists manual. His sins, according to the list, included sharing a cartoon of Jesus and Muhammad on Twitter and visiting a London strip club. You hardly have to be a scholar to realize that neither is particularly convincing evidence that Nawaaz, himself a practicing Muslim, is some sort of bigot. Joining him on the list was Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a victim of female genital mutilation in her native Somalia and an outspoken campaigner against the practice, as well as others, like child marriage and honor killings, common throughout the Islamic world.
Rightly enraged, Nawaaz threatened to sue, and the SPLC quietly removed the list. When questioned about the removal by the National Review last week, the SPLC refused to comment.
Examples of this sort of lunacy abound. The SPLC, for example, still maintains a watch list of groups and individuals promoting male supremacy, an ideology that misrepresents all women as genetically inferior, manipulative and stupid. Among its preachers, according to the SPLC, is Christina Hoff Sommers, an American philosopher and writer who has criticized the radical feminist position that saw all women as perpetual victims and called instead for an equity feminism, a classical liberal position that focuses on equal treatment of men and women rather than on identity politics.
These examples are, of course, grotesque, and its easy to want to dismiss them as yet more rotten examples of our ever more crass civic culture. Its a privilege we cant afford: When a venerated organization whose mission statement still speaks of seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society spends so many of its considerable resources besmirching utterly legitimate activists and advocatesmany of whom, like Nawaaz, working to reform oppressive and violent structureswe would do well to stop and recognize the pernicious patterns at play here. The SPLC applies the powerful language of civil rights to mark those with whom it disagrees as bigots or racists or white supremacists, inviting likeminded journalists to use the organizations sterling reputation as an unimpeachably credentialed reason to push political opponents outside the bounds of acceptable debate. Facing Hoff Sommerss claim that so many alleged feminists these days spend most of their energy attacking men rather than striving for equality is hard; labeling her an extremist who should therefore not be taken seriously by serious people is much easier. The SPLC has half a billion dollars and seemingly endless appetite for such character assassination campaigns, which should trouble anyone committed to unfettered inquiry, intellectual exchange, and the other old-fashioned values for which journalism, academia, and other high-minded pursuits once stood.
But the prognosis isnt all bleak. While the SPLC does its best to impose its ideology by encouraging reporters within its echo chamber to adopt its absurd definitions, free-thinkers like Sam Harris these days can simply launch their own podcast, raise a fortune from committed listeners, and reach tens of millions of people, many more than care or even know about Ezra Klein and Vox. Let the SPLC continue to smear and squirrel away its millions in off-shore accounts: Common sense these days is just a download away.
The SPLC was never “venerable”. Morris Dees made it clear from the beginning that he was in it to make himself rich.
Like many universities, SPLC is simply a private “non-profit” hedge fund who happens to market some other services on the side.
Are you White?
Have you spent time with someone else who was also White?
According to the SPLC, you are a member of a hate group.

AMERICA IS INDEED BECOMING TWO NATIONS
Reich is not alone in this belief. On March 6th of this year, Morris Dees, co-founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama, told an audience that the so-called “Religious Right” is more dangerous than Neo-Nazis and Muslim extremists.
In other words, to the Dees and Reiches of this land, if your allegiance is first and foremost to Almighty God and not to the almighty state, you are more dangerous than a terrorist. Reich takes great offense when right-wing fundamentalists criticize him and other secularists as being moral relativists.

Don’t accuse an innocent person of being white.
I know it was question only, but we all have to be careful.
Next you’ll ask if they approve of the NRA or Donald Trump.
We all have to be careful.
SPLC has never been anything but a vehicle to finance Morris Dee’s perversions.
The SPLC, by mere virtue of living long enough to have a history, has attempted to pigeonhole me with the following:
1. I live IN the South, therefore I must be a “Southerner”.
(I’m a self-appointed transplant.)
2. I am not of any listed ethnicity.
(The information gatherers don’t have a box for ‘half-breeds’.)
3. I am a military veteran, so that makes me dangerous.
(Again, the ‘box makers’ don’t have ones for ‘disabled’.)
There are others, but I meed not bore you with the details. I am sure you are ‘with it’ well enough to make your own correct surmises.
Rip Van Sessions needs to wake up and start going after these dangerous organizations.......throw in the ACLU.......ok, just dreamin’ about that one (but dreams can come true)........;)
Anyone who’s read “The Five Orange Pips” knows that the Klan fell apart when Col. Openshaw left America with their papers.
The SPLC and Morris Dees are terrorists.
“According to tax filings, the group took in $136 million last year alone, bringing its total assets to a whopping half-a-billion dollars.”
The SPLC is more than likely teetering on bankruptcy.
They’ve gone so far now they’re to totally invalid!
Potok would have been in Hitler's inner circle, had he lived in a different era (yes, I know he's Jewish, and that's partly my point).
So, ol’ Morris has some perverted proclivities? All that in addition to be a con artist.
IIRC ole Morris couldn't "stay away" from his underage daughter. They went to court and the whole matter is public record.

Southern Poverty Law Center and Hate

Splcexposed.com. Write that site down and visit it often.
It reveals how the radical Left is trying to destroy organizations and individuals who are working to defend Americas families and our civil society.
Splcexposed.com specifically reveals the agenda of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), an extreme Leftist operation that is swimming in money and deception.
Masquerading as a benevolent organization, the SPLC has adopted the intelligence and vocabulary of the big bully on the playground who engages in name-calling in order to isolate and intimidate anyone who wont join his wicked little cabal.
You know the drill. The Leftists always resort to the nanny, nanny boo boo strategy when they know they cant win a debate on the merits.
Sexist! Racist! Bigot! HATER! they scream.
SPLC has institutionalized the idiotic practice of name-calling and now is known for its well publicized list of so-called haters. But it is much more dangerous than the childish bully as they increasingly use mob-like tactics to blacklist and vilify those on the right who are among the most successful at preserving and protecting Judeo-Christian values and the Constitution.
The SPLCs incendiary tactics have spawned at least two acts of shocking violence, the most recent being the attempt to mow down Republican congressmen on a baseball field, critically wounding House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, whom the SPLC had profiled on its website.
Previously, a radical Leftist gunman entered the building of the Christian ministry Family Research Council and shot a building manager who miraculously still succeeded in disarming the thug before he could massacre the FRC staff. Now in prison, the domestic terrorist admitted that he targeted the ministry because the Southern Poverty Law Center had listed FRC as a hate group.
Founded in 1971, ostensibly to fight evil organizations like the KKK, the Southern Poverty Law Center marched ever further to the Left and figured out over the years that it only had to do one simple thing to defeat legitimate organizations and silence debate: list their political enemies as haters too.
The tactic is incredibly effective because 1) most Americans dont look beyond the headline and see what people really stand for, 2) no one wants to be associated with a hater, and 3) the mass media, who are part of the ignorant bullys sick little club, gleefully spread the lies far and wide.
The SPLC, vitriolic Leftist politicians and their media minions are engaged in an all-out war of lies on those who believe in free-market principles, that marriage is between one man and one woman, and that gender is part of our DNA.
And, boy, are they raking in the big bucks in the process. The SPLC is uber rich. In fact, its coffers have more than $320 million, much of which is stashed in off-shore accounts. Read that sentence again and tell me if it makes any sense for an organization that claims to be a champion for the poor.
In the description of their programs, the SPLC doesnt focus on reducing poverty, putting food into the mouths of hungry children, or training the underprivileged in skills that can help them land jobs.
It does, however, talk a lot about its three-pronged strategy to battle racial and social injustice. But what does that include?
The first prong is Fighting Hate. It alone decides what constitutes hate, which it has chosen to be nothing more than disagreeing with the Leftist political agenda.
The second prong is Teaching Tolerance. In practice, that means brainwashing children into a extremist worldview by partnering with public schools to use SPLC teaching materials. (For example, on the SPLCs website dedicated to tolerance, it instructs educators to Teach the facts about sex assigned at birth, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression, and learn how to advocate for LGBT youth.)
The third prong is Seeking Justice. And what does it highlight in its definition of justice? Of course, socialistic economic policies.
And in recent years, its Intelligence Project has been monitoring and exposing the activities of anti-LGBT hate groups that disseminate demonizing propaganda. The chief vehicle for its expose is its quarterly magazine, The Intelligence Report, self-described as a periodical monitoring the radical right in the U.S.
And there you have it. The SPLC wields its right of free speech like a club, bludgeoning the those who seek to debate ideas in the public square. It is nothing more than an activist, Leftist operation fostering civil unrest and the destruction of constitutional rights.
So who is the real hater?
